More Australians more mobile than ever | Digital Business

These days it seems that you can?t talk about doing business online without talking about mobile connectivity as well. The two are becoming more intrinsically linked, as smartphones and tablets bring the internet with us wherever we go. And as the latest Australian Mobile Phone Lifestyle Index (AMPLI) survey results show, the rise of mobile connectivity does not look like slowing any time soon.

AIMIA, the Digital Industry Association of Australia, has been running the AMPLI survey for eight years to gauge a better understanding of how Australians are using mobile phones.? Given that the iPhone had not even been launched eight years ago, you can imagine how dramatically the survey results have changed over the years. Over 3,000 mobile phone owners participated in the 2012 survey.

How many Aussies are using smartphones?

According to the 2012 survey results 76% of respondents had a smartphone, up from 67% the previous year. Based on the purchase intentions of mobile phone owners, it appears this is likely to increase to 84% by the middle of this year.

The iPhone leads the mobile handset market, owned by 40% of respondents (up from 32%). The report also found that Samsung mobile phones are becoming more popular, rising from 13% to 18%, while Nokia recorded a significant drop, from 28% to 16%.

How are Aussies using mobile phones?

The mobile phone is clearly about more than standard calling and texting in our modern world. The survey found that in 2012 79% of respondents were getting information online, 76% were visiting websites or searching online, 72% were using their mobile phone for entertainment purposes.? Further, 69% were emailing on their mobile phone and 42% bought things online.

Nearly one third of respondents (31%) checked their email on their mobile phone at least five times a day, while 25% visited websites or did online searches at least five times a day. Overall, 17% of respondents used their mobile phone to buy things online at least once a week.

It appears that mobile phones are also increasingly being used to help inform consumers? purchasing decisions. The survey revealed that 38% of respondents use their mobile phone to check prices and that 43% use it to check reviews before making a purchase decision.

Website versus app?

The majority of AMPLI survey respondents used a mix of apps and websites on their mobile phones. A very small proportion used apps only (4%) or websites only (8%). While the majority of respondents had downloaded six or more apps on their phone in the six months before the survey (71%), most respondents only use five or less apps on a weekly basis (60%).

Most respondents indicated that they accessed websites by typing the URL directly into the browser on their phone (75%). However, 68% also clicked on links provided in search engine results and 48% clicked on links in text messages.

How about advertising?

While 40% of respondents had opted in to receive SMS or MMS messages from 1-5 businesses, 43% were not receiving any SMS or MMS advertising.

Around a quarter of respondents had engaged with vouchers or coupons sent to their mobile phone (26%), or with banner/text ads in websites (26%) and apps (25%). When it came to social media, 24% had engaged with ads or messages about a business via Twitter or Facebook.

So what does this all mean for your business?

There are a lot of statistics here (and more in the report), providing plenty of food for thought for Australian businesses. With around 4 in 5 mobile phone owners using their mobile phone to get information, visit websites or perform searches ? many multiple times a day ? it appears to be more important than ever that your business has some form of online presence to maximise your chances of being found. The trends over the last few years show that consumers are also becoming more and more comfortable shopping and doing other transactions online.

When it comes to the question of whether businesses should have a mobile-friendly website or an app, the survey shows that mobile phone users are engaging with both. But if you are going to invest in an app, it is a good idea to ask yourself what you can do to make sure your app is one of the five that the average mobile phone owner engages with regularly.

And while it seems that a relatively low proportion of consumers are engaging with other forms of advertising, such as SMS and MMS messages, the trend over the last few years appears to show that consumers are becoming increasingly willing to connect with businesses through these forms of advertising.

Have you had success engaging with customers through their mobile devices? Or are you considering addressing mobile in your business strategy? Share your thoughts and experiences with us.

Facebook investors react ... on Twitter

Facebook beat fourth-quarter earnings and revenue estimates, and improved mobile ad sales, but investors weren't all that impressed.

Facebook (FB) stock tanked 10% within minutes in after-hours trading following the earnings release. But the stock nearly fully recovered before edging lower again as CEO Mark Zuckerberg, CFO David Ebersman and COO Sheryl Sandberg answered questions from analysts on a conference call. Shares were down 4% at the conclusion of the call, trading just below $30 a piece. Facebook finished the day's regular trading up almost 1.5% to $31.24.

The results and the stock reaction lit up that other big social networking site: Twitter.

Revenue from mobile advertising represented about 23% of total ad revenue during the fourth quarter, the company said. That's an improvement from 14% in the third quarter. Prior to that, Facebook had practically no mobile revenue.

Though mobile advertising revenue increased, the growth of mobile users slowed. During the fourth quarter, monthly active users of Facebook's mobile app rose by 57%, down from a 61% growth rate in the third quarter and 67% in the second quarter.

Still, Zuckerberg cemented the social network's direction, noting that "there is no argument today. Facebook is a mobile company." And he thinks that's a really good thing.

But some users quipped that Facebook's ad strategy could impact the overall user experience of the social network.

While Facebook didn't provide formal guidance for the year, Ebersman warned that the company's expenses will rise throughout the year as it expands its workforce.

Ebersman also noted that Instagram, which Facebook purchased last year for $1 billion, is continuing to grow rapidly.

Zuckerberg was also optimistic about the site's newer features, including Gifts and Graph Search, but doesn't expect them to be big money makers right away.

Also during the call, Zuckerberg reiterated that the company isn't building a phone, and revealed some interesting details about the company's relationships with Google (GOOG) and Apple (AAPL).

Though Zuckerberg and team continued to stress the the company has improved and remains focused on its mobile strategy, Facebook shares declined 4% Wednesday evening.

But some investors are willing to sleep on it and wait to see how the stock performs Thursday.

Coast Guard still working to remove oil from leaking barge near Vicksburg

?

JACKSON, Mississippi -- The Coast Guard is letting southbound vessels pass through a closed section of the Mississippi River at Vicksburg to test how they will affect efforts to remove oil from a leaking barge.

Chief Petty Officer Paul Roszkowski tells The Associated Press a 16-mile stretch of the river remains closed four days after two barges struck a railroad bridge.

The leaking barge is pushed against the Louisiana shore. Crews hope to start moving the oil to another barge Wednesday.

Roszkowski says southbound barges are being allowed to pass so crews can monitor the effects on cleanup operations. The Coast Guard could permit test runs with northbound barges on Wednesday afternoon.

The Guard said 7,000 gallons of crude oil were unaccounted for, but some could have seeped inside the barge.

This is THT.

I keep at least 16 years cash in reserve at all times.

I pay for trucks with cash and buy two at once and store the other one, just in case.

Other than that, credit union.

Why would he have ever had to get a loan? He kept every dime he ever made stuffed in his mattress, but after taxes returned to what they were in previous years, plus that damn Obamacare that is going to instantly suck everyone dry, a loan is now required!

Like others have said, shop your local credit union, but don't hesitate to haggle with dealer financing as well, as they can sometimes offer lower rates as they bring many loans to different banks.

Try penfed.org

It'll take a week or so to get the check, and they aren't the brightest, but they are dirt cheap. That's a big benefit when you're dealing with a car manufacturer that doesn't have great rates on their more popular models. Penfed right now is 1.49% for a 5 year loan I believe. The usual, you apply online and they mail you a check that you can make out to the car dealer.

You have to be "a member" but you can join on their site for $20. Totally legit.

To Everyone: Thanks for keeping the mood "light".

Sometimes people have a great experience with a particular company in these situations that is why I asked. Of course I have a bank to go to but prefer not to deal with Wells Fargo.

I have a friend who buys car paper for a bank all day long. He went to a credit union as they had a better rate than his banks employee rate.

credit union, local bank. Just get informed, dealership may be the best around. I would definitely know what I could get elsewhere and then make the dealer work to match or beat it.

Canon EOS 6D

Prior to the announcement of the Canon EOS 6D ($2,099 direct, body only) and the Nikon D600, shooters who wanted a full-frame camera?one with an image sensor the same size as a 35mm film frame?were faced with a small number of choices at $3,000 and up. Both companies cut about $1,000 off the price of entry to full-frame with new models that sacrifice some features that pro shooters are used to, but are packaged in smaller bodies that are similar in design to the top-end APS-C cameras. The 20-megapixel 6D also adds some enthusiast-friendly features?notably an integrated GPS receiver and Wi-Fi capability?which, along with fantastic image quality, earn it an almost-perfect rating and our Editors' Choice award. The $6,000 full-frame Nikon D4 is still a better choice for anyone who relies on photography to put food on the table, but most folks simply don't need that much camera in their bag.

Design and Features
While it's bigger than entry-level cameras with smaller APS-C image sensors, the 6D is compact for a full-frame D-SLR. It measures 4.4 by 5.7 by 2.8 inches (HWD) and weighs just under 1.7 pounds without a lens. Compare this with the Canon EOS 5D Mark III, a more traditional full-frame camera that measures 4.6 by 6 by 3 inches and weighs about 2.1 pounds. If you currently shoot with an APS-C Canon camera like the EOS Rebel T4i or EOS 7D and are considering an upgrade to full-frame be aware that while you can mount any EF lens to any Canon D-SLR, Canon's line of EF-S lenses are designed only for use with APS-C cameras and can't be used with the 6D, 5D Mark III, or EOS-1D X cameras. This is in contrast to Nikon's approach, which allows its APS-C DX lens lineup to be used on the D600, the D800, and D4 in a special crop mode. Like Canon's other full-frame offerings there is no flash built into the 6D?you'll need to use an external one. This isn't atypical for a full-frame camera?Nikon does include a pop-up flash on the D600 and D800, but omits it on the D4, and Sony does not include a flash in its full-frame bodies.

The control layout is familiar to anyone who has handled a Canon SLR before. There's a standard mode dial on top left side with an integrated On/Off lever. To the right of the viewfinder you'll find a control wheel, the shutter release, and buttons to adjust the AF Mode, Drive Mode, ISO, Metering Mode, and to activate the backlight on the monochrome information LCD, also located on the top of the camera. The rear controls are compressed when compared with the 5D Mark III, but you'll still have access to a rear control wheel with an integrated four-way controller, an Info button that controls what is displayed on the rear LCD, the Menu button, a control switch to activate Live View and movie recording, image playback controls, and buttons to engage the autofocus system, activate Exposure Lock, and select the active autofocus point. There's also a physical lock switch that prevents the rear control from adjusting settings when turned?that wheel controls exposure compensation in most shooting modes.

First seen on the Rebel series of APS-C cameras, the Q button allows you to change settings via the rear LCD. Hit it and you'll be able to adjust lens aperture, ISO, Exposure Compensation, Flash Compensation, JPG output, White Balance, and other common shooting settings?the rear control pad is used to navigate from item to item and the control wheel scrolls through the available settings.

The camera's large optical viewfinder trumps even the best APS-C models in terms of size and brightness?but it doesn't offer a full 100 percent field of view. Instead Canon opted to include a 97 percent viewfinder?the camera will capture a little bit of extra information around the edges of the frame, and the slightly smaller viewfinder makes it possible to change the focus screen?a feature that was omitted from the higher-end 5D Mark III. This is a boon to Canon shooters who use the rare manual focus Canon lens like the TS-E 90mm f/2.8, or any of the manual focus Carl Zeiss lenses available for Canon cameras like the Makro-Planar T* 2/100, as Canon's EG-S focus screen is ideally suited for accurate manual focus with faster lenses.

The resolution of the 3-inch rear LCD tops one million dots. It's extremely sharp, allowing you to confirm critical focus when reviewing shots or shooting in Live View mode. It's fixed?the Sony Alpha 99 is the only full-frame D-SLR with an articulating display?and isn't quite as large as the 3.2-inch screen on Nikon's D600, but it is sharper.

The 6D is the first SLR with integrated Wi-Fi connectivity, and overall, it's a good implementation. There are a number of ways to use the wireless features, and some are more useful than others. Canon gives you the ability to share photos directly with another Canon Wi-Fi camera and to print directly to a Wi-Fi-enabled printer. So you'll have to be out shooting with a partner who also has a Wi-Fi-equipped Canon camera to take advantage of the former, and the latter assumes that you'll be printing your photos without cropping, retouching, or other post-production work. You also have the option of viewing your photos on a DLNA device, like a Wi-Fi HDTV or set-top box.

The more useful functions involve sharing your photos online, and taking control of the 6D via your smartphone. You can send photos and videos directly to Facebook, Twitter, or YouTube via the Canon Image Gateway service. To set this up you'll need to install the EOS Utility application on your PC or Mac and create an account on the Canon Image Gateway service. From there you can link your social networking accounts. Connecting the 6D to your computer pairs it with your Canon account, and will let you send JPG images and videos directly to the service of your choice. You'll need to be connected to a Wi-Fi network, and the EOS 6D can store the SSID and login information for up to three networks at a time.

Photos and videos can also be directly sent to your iOS or Android device. You can connect to a phone when it, and the 6D, are on the same Wi-Fi network. Or the 6D can act as a hotspot for direct connection?and you can save presets for either configuration in one of the five slots dedicated to this mode. Once connected, you can transfer images and videos directly to your phone via the EOS Remote app; it's available for free in both the Apple and Android app stores. Raw transfer is supported?because photos are sized down to 2-megapixel JPG images in order to speed up transfers. You can also use your phone to control the camera wirelessly. A live feed of the camera's Live View mode shows up on your phone's screen, and you can select a focus point via touch, change shooting settings, and fire the shutter. There's noticeable lag in the video feed?it's not as speedy as the USB tethered computer connection that is possible via the included EOS Utility software for Mac or Windows?but it's useable in the field, whereas traditional tethered shooting is more useful in a studio setting.

You also get integrated GPS. It's a powerful receiver?it only took about 40 seconds to lock on to my location on initial setup?and you can adjust how often it polls for a new location. By default it checks for your location every 15 seconds, but you can go as fast as once a second or as slow as every five minutes. Using the GPS definitely puts a strain on the camera's battery. I was out shooting on a cold morning and went from a full charge to two battery bars in only a few hours. And the GPS will continue to check for your location even when the camera is turned off. The photos I took were, without exception, accurately geotagged, appearing on Lightroom's map at the exact locations from which I shot them. If you want to add location data to your photos, you'll likely want to set the camera to check with the GPS satellites less often to extend the battery life, and disable the GPS before you turn the camera off. If that's an unacceptable compromise, tote an extra battery. There is an optional battery grip available?it plugs into the bottom of the camera and holds two cells, doubling the operation time.

Timbuktu manuscripts mostly safe, university says

JOHANNESBURG (AP) ? A limited number of manuscripts in Timbuktu in Mali were damaged or stolen by Islamist extremists last week before they fled the fabled desert city, a South African university said Wednesday.

People in the north Malian city who have knowledge of the documents reported that there was no malicious destruction of any library or collection, said the University of Cape Town, which helped fund a state-of-the-art library to house manuscripts.

"The custodians of the libraries worked quietly throughout the rebel occupation of Timbuktu to ensure the safety of their materials," said the university. Islamist rebels have been in control of Timbuktu for nearly 10 months.

The university said that a report from Britain's Sky News that 25,000 manuscripts had been burned was false. Other news reports quoted the city mayor, who wasn't in the city, saying manuscripts had been destroyed, the university said.

With its Islamic treasures and centuries-old mud-walled buildings including an iconic mosque, Timbuktu is a U.N.-designated World Heritage Site.

Most of the manuscripts, which are as many as 900 years old, were gathered between the 1980s and 2000 from all over Mali for the Ahmad Baba Institute for Higher Learning and Islamic Research, which moved into its new home in 2009.

Media reports said that the Ahmad Baba Institute had been ransacked by the militants. But the university said a senior researcher at the institute, Mohamed Diagayete, said the majority of the manuscripts were stored in an older building elsewhere in the city.

The manuscripts cover subjects from science, astrology and medicine to history, theology, grammar and geography. They date back to the late 12th century, the start of a 300-year golden age for Timbuktu as a spiritual and intellectual capital for the propagation of Islam.

Islamist extremists decimated tourism in 2011 when three Europeans were taken hostage from a Timbuktu restaurant in November that year. In April 2012, Tuareg nationalist rebels seized control of Timbuktu from government troops. A day later Islamist insurgents moved into the city. They banned music, insisted women cover themselves and began carrying out public executions.

On Tuesday, Timbuktu was in control of French and Malian troops, including some 250 French paratroopers dropped from the sky. The extremists melted into the desert without firing a shot. Townspeople were jubilant at the city's liberation from intolerant Islamist extremists.

"The protection of the cultural and intellectual heritage of this region needs to be enhanced and promoted," the university said. "The abandonment of the security of Timbuktu nine months ago, the flight of archivists and researchers, and the closure of libraries should not be repeated."

Apple pulls Vine from Featured section on App Store due to porn in Editor's Picks

Apple has pulled Vine from the Featured section of the App Store after a pornagraphic video was featured in the Editor?s Picks section of the app. While Vine?s porn issues have been widely discussed, Apple had taken no action until today.

Vine was removed from the Featured section despite the fact that most apps spend at least a full week there. According to TechCrunch, Twitter, which owns Vine, has responded to the controversy, saying:

The presence of nudity or porn on media-based social networks is expected, but the featuring of such content is a step over the line. Twitter later explained that it was ?human error? that caused the porn slip-up.

Last week, the 500px app was removed from the App Store following a controversy with nude photos, only to return today after making changes including adding a mature rating.

Vine has already started to block certain tags in order to filter out pornography, we'll have to see if their efforts will be enough to keep Apple from pulling it.

Kimberly McCarthy Execution Postponed: Judge In Texas Delays Woman's Punishment Until April

HUNTSVILLE, Texas ? The first woman scheduled to be executed in the U.S. since 2010 won a reprieve Tuesday, mere hours before she was scheduled to be taken to the Texas death chamber.

State District Judge Larry Mitchell, in Dallas, rescheduled Kimberly McCarthy's punishment for April 3 so lawyers for the former nursing home therapist could have more time to pursue an appeal focused on whether her predominantly white jury was improperly selected on the basis of race. McCarthy is black.

Dallas County prosecutors, who initially contested the motion to reschedule, chose to not appeal the ruling.

District Attorney Craig Watkins said the 60-day delay was "appropriate." If no irregularities are discovered, he said he'd move forward with the execution.

"We want to make sure everything is done correctly," he said.

The 51-year-old McCarthy was convicted and sent to death row for the 1997 stabbing, beating and robbery of a 71-year-old neighbor. She learned of the reprieve less than five hours before she was scheduled for lethal injection, already in a small holding cell a few feet from the death chamber at the Texas Department of Criminal Justice Huntsville Unit.

"I'm happy right now over that," she told prison agency spokesman John Hurt. "There's still work to be done on my case."

Hurt said McCarthy was in good spirits and "didn't seem tense or nervous" even before she learned she would live.

A Dallas County jury convicted her of killing neighbor Dorothy Booth at the retired college psychology professor's home in Lancaster, about 15 miles south of Dallas.

"We are very pleased that we will now have an opportunity to present evidence of discrimination in the selection of the jury that sentenced Kimberly McCarthy to death," said Maurie Levin, a University of Texas law professor and McCarthy's lawyer.

"Of the twelve jurors seated at trial, all were white, except one, and eligible non-white jurors were excluded from serving by the state. ... These facts must be understood in the context of the troubling and long-standing history of racial discrimination in jury selection in Dallas County, including at the time of Ms. McCarthy's trial," Levin said.

Investigators said Booth had agreed to give McCarthy a cup of sugar before she was attacked with a butcher knife and candelabra. Booth's finger also was severed so McCarthy could take her wedding ring. It was among three slayings linked to McCarthy, who'd been addicted to crack cocaine.

McCarthy would have been the 13th woman executed in the U.S. and the fourth in Texas, the nation's busiest death penalty state, since the Supreme Court allowed capital punishment to resume in 1976. In that same time period, more than 1,300 male inmates have been executed nationwide.

Federal Bureau of Justice Statistics compiled from 1980 through 2008 show women make up about 10 percent of homicide offenders nationwide. According to the NAACP Legal Defense Fund, 3,146 people were on the nation's death rows as of Oct. 1, and only 63 ? 2 percent ? were women.

Spain's 'doping doctor' in court

A Spanish doctor has appeared in court accused of running one of the world's largest sports doping rings.

Dr Eufemiano Fuentes's trial in Madrid comes nearly seven years after police raided his offices and seized some 200 bags of blood which were linked to a number of top cyclists.

Dozens of cyclists have been called to testify as witnesses in the trial.

Dr Fuentes, his sister and three former cycling coaches are charged with breaking public health laws.

They could not be charged with doping-related crimes because Spain had no anti-doping law at the time of their arrest.

Prosecutors must prove that the defendants' actions put the lives of the athletes at risk - something the defence is expected to deny.

Monday saw only opening legal arguments. Dr Fuentes's testimony was postponed until Tuesday morning.

Analysis

The great international interest in this trial is linked to the claim by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) that it was told, back in 2006, that the blood bags seized were from athletes from "several sports".

However that claim will not be the focus of this trial, which is expected to look only on cycling.

A suspicion - that some evidence seized during the raids has been held back - will therefore persist.

However, Spain's anti-doping agency says it has seen no evidence to back up that suspicion.

The BBC has spoken to a Spanish long-distance runner who claimed that he was encouraged to dope via Dr Fuentes's alleged network.

I asked Dr Fuentes's lawyer, Julian Perez, if the doctor had clients who were not cyclists. "I do not know", was his response.

The case comes days after former seven times Tour de France winner Lance Armstrong admitted to using banned drugs and blood doping during his cycling career.

Code-names

Spanish police carried out a series of raids on offices, laboratories and flats in Madrid, Zaragoza and El Escorial in May 2006 as part of an investigation known as Operation Puerto.

They found about 200 bags of blood or frozen plasma with labels that were believed to be code-names for Dr Fuentes's clients - athletes who were allegedly benefiting from a highly-sophisticated doping programme.

Dozens of cyclists were allegedly implicated in the scandal, including former Tour de France winner Alberto Contador, who is expected to give evidence in the trial.

The World Anti-Doping Agency has said that it was told, at the time of the raids, that the bags of blood also related to athletes from several sports, including football and tennis.

But the trial will focus only on cyclists who, according to the chief prosecutor in the case, are the only athletes that could be identified from the bags of blood seized.

The trial is expected to last until mid-March.

If found guilty, the defendants could face up to two years in prison and a two-year professional ban.

Gas leaks proves fatal at Samsung chip plant in Korea

A maintenance contractor called out to fix a hydrofluoric acid leak at a Samsung plant has died after being taken to a hospital, according to Korean media. Four others were injured by the lethal gas but have reportedly been discharged by doctors. The factory in question is located within South Korea, which isn't known for the sort of lax safety standards that plague workers in China, but AsiaE reports the accident will nevertheless be investigated to find out if any laws were breached in the way the leak was handled, and if the killed contractor was wearing the right protective gear. For the sake of context, it's worth remembering that even state-of-the-art installations can be prone to accidents -- in 2011, for example, seven American workers were injured in an explosion at Intel's semiconductor fab in Arizona.
