That $29.49 million goes further than you might think
NFL commissioner Roger Goodell hasn?t been too popular with the fans over the past few years. And 61 percent of the league?s players disapprove of his leadership according to an anonymous poll conducted last month.
But the owners must think he?s doing just fine.?They paid Goodell a salary of $29.49 million in 2011, nearly tripling his pay, according to a report published Friday by Sports Business Journal. That?s $10 million more than Drew Brees, the NFL?s highest paid player, earned over the same span.
Here are eight things the owners could have bought instead ? a list that may come in handy in the event of buyer?s remorse.
1.?A personal Boeing CH-47 Chinook helicopter
The twin-engine, heavy-lift helicopter, ideal for troop movement, would surely come in handy when the NFL expands to London.
2. The entire roster of last year?s New York Islanders
The team?s payroll was $29.5 million according to USA Today?s annual salary report for the 2011-12 season.
3. Myspace
The once-massive social network sold for just over $30 million in 2011.
4. A dozen?Peter Aloisson Kings Button iPhones
One of the world?s most expensive phones, it?s made from solid 18-carat yellow gold, white gold and rose gold and encrusted with 138 brilliant-cut diamonds.
5. Four used?British Colossus-class aircraft carriers
That?s according to the asking price of this eBay Motors auction.
6. 107 bottles of 1907 Heidsieck champagne
These hundred-year-old bottles from the Heidsieck vineyard in Champagne were lost when the ship carrying them was torpedoed during World War I ? but survived in the frigid waters off Finland. About 2,000 bottles were salvaged in 1998 and run for approximately $275,000 a pop. (Pun intended.)
7.?Twenty red Tibetan Mastiffs
That?s according to the March 2011 sale of Hong Dong, the 11-month old pup who sold for $1.5 million.
8. An intimate concert by?Beyonc? every night for a month
The songstress was paid $1 million to perform a 45-minute gig for Muammar Gaddafi?s New Year?s Eve party in 2009, a fee her rep says went to the Clinton-Bush Haiti Fund.
