Exo-cornucopia

?

Watch out! There's a lot of stuff up there...

This has been an extraordinary week for planets (moons), exoplanets, and astrobiology. I?m hard pushed to write properly about all these things but sometimes the sheer tidal mass of discoveries tells its own story.

?

?

?

And tidal masses is the first one up. This week new results from the Cassini mission around Saturn were presented in Nature (and discussed in this nice piece) that suggest Titan?s surface responds to the gravitational tides of Saturn by lifting and relaxing a substantial 10 meters in altitude. This indicates that Titan?s interior is quite flexible, in fact it indicates something that has long been suspected ? Titan probably has a subsurface ocean of liquid water, somewhere within 100 km of the surface. Sustained in part by radioisotope decay in Titan?s rocky core, this would be far from pure water, but water nonetheless.

A glimmering in the void (ESO/L. Calcada)

Far, far away, around a distant star called Tau Bootis, astronomers have now succeeded in obtaining the first direct measurement of the spectrum of light from the atmosphere of a hot Jupiter planet. All previous measurements of the atmospheric spectrum and composition of such worlds have come from data taken during transits of the parent star (where starlight serves as a brilliant back-light through the outer layers of atmosphere). By nailing the light coming directly from the plant known as Tau Boo b, astronomers have not only pinned down the planetary mass (by learning the orbital inclination relative to our viewpoint) but have set a precedent for the future. The direct measurement of light from exoplanets is one of the holy grails of astronomy? (yeah, there?s lots of these grails in science, I know).

And for another hot Jupiter, the planet HD 189733b (distinguished by transiting a star that at 63 light years away appears pleasantly bright in our skies, enabling lots of great observations to be made) has been observed to respond directly to a pummeling from a flare event on its parent star. In a stroke of luck the star underwent a large X-ray bright flare event just 8 hours before the transiting planet was observed with the Hubble Space Telescope. Unlike earlier measurements, this one showed a clear ?plume? or tail of atmosphere being lost by the planet ? adding it to the family of evaporating worlds, albeit periodically.

The ejecta zone, watch out Phobos! (Purdue U./Loic Chappaz)

And finally (although I?ve skipped all sorts of other goodies, like peculiarly close super-Earth exoplanets that come as close as 1.2 million miles every 97 days), some more food for thought in the search for life elsewhere. Some new work indicates that the martian moon Phobos is in the direct line of fire for material that?s blasted off the martian surface by asteroid impacts. As this small moon scoots around Mars every 7.5 hours it can collect a significant amount of Mars filth. Why is this interesting? Well, it?s an awful lot easier to go and land on Phobos than it is to land on Mars ? so perhaps we should be thinking of sieving through the sands of Phobos in order to get a sampling of eons of Mars ejecta, and any possible microorganisms?

Just another week in science.

(AP) ? House Republicans have won a historic political fight to hold Attorney General Eric Holder in contempt of Congress, but the GOP likely is still a long way from obtaining documents it wants in an investigation of a bungled gun-tracking operation.

The road leading to a possible lawsuit by the House was filled with emotion Thursday. More than 100 Democrats walked up an aisle and out of the chamber to boycott the first of two contempt votes, saying Republicans were more interested in shameful election-year politics than documents.

Republicans demanded the documents for an ongoing investigation, but their arguments focused more on the need for closure for the family of slain Border Patrol agent Brian Terry. Two guns from the gun-tracking operation called Fast and Furious were found near his body after a shootout in Arizona.

Democrats promised closure as well, but said a less-partisan Republican investigation ? not contempt resolutions ? was the only way to get it.

Adding to the emotion of the day, the family of the slain agent issued a statement backing the Republicans.

"The Terry family takes no pleasure in the contempt vote against Attorney General Eric Holder. Such a vote should not have been necessary. The Justice Department should have released the documents related to Fast and Furious months ago," the statement said.

It all happened on the day that President Barack Obama's health care law survived in the Supreme Court, prompting some Democrats to speculate that the votes were scheduled to be overwhelmed by news stories about the ruling.

About five hours after the court ruled, with news sites flooded with information about the health care ruling, the House voted 255-67 to declare Holder in criminal contempt ? an action that could lead to criminal prosecution but probably won't.

The matter goes to the U.S. attorney for the District of Columbia, who works under Holder.

In previous contempt cases, federal prosecutors in the nation's capital have refused to act on congressional contempt citations against members of their own administration.

A second vote of 258-95 held Holder in civil contempt and allows the House to bring a civil lawsuit in an effort to force him to turn over the documents.

In past cases, courts have been reluctant to settle disputes between the executive and legislative branches of government.

The issue became more complicated when Obama invoked a broad form of executive privilege, a legal position that is designed to keep private certain communications of executive branch agencies.

The House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, which is conducting the investigation and subpoenaed the documents, will consult with the House counsel's office about a court challenge to the administration's decision not to cooperate, committee spokesman Frederick Hill said.

Thursday's debate was about Justice Department documents written after Fast and Furious was shut down. The subpoena covered a 10-month period from February 2011, when the Justice Department denied that guns purchased in the U.S. were allowed to "walk" across the border into Mexico, to early December 2011 when the department acknowledged the earlier assertion was in error.

Republicans said the contempt citations were necessary because Holder refused to hand over ? without any preconditions ? documents that could explain why the Obama administration took 10 months to come clean about gun-walking. The operation identified more than 2,000 illicitly purchased weapons. Some 1,400 of them have yet to be recovered in the failed strategy to track the weapons to gun-running rings.

African-American lawmakers led Thursday's walkout in support of Holder, the nation's first black attorney general. Democratic House leader Nancy Pelosi, who joined them, protested that Republicans had gone "over the edge" in their partisanship.

Seventeen Democrats voted with Republicans in favor of the criminal contempt resolution, while two Republicans ? Reps. Scott Rigell of Virginia and Steven LaTourette of Ohio ? joined other Democrats in voting against it.

Twenty-one Democrats supported the Republicans in the civil contempt vote, but all the votes against the resolution came from Democrats.

The National Rifle Association pressed hard for the contempt resolutions, leaning on members of both parties who want to stay in the NRA's good graces.

Andrew Arulanandam, an NRA spokesman, said all 17 Democrats who voted for criminal contempt had previously received an "A'' grade from the organization.

Holder said afterward that the vote was merely a politically motivated act in an election year

"Today's vote may make for good political theater in the minds of some, but it is ? at base ? both a crass effort and a grave disservice to the American people. They expect ? and they deserve ? far better," Holder said in New Orleans.

The NRA contended the administration wanted to use Operation Fast and Furious to win gun control measures. Democrats who normally support the NRA but who voted against the contempt citations would lose any 100 percent ratings from the group.

Lochte beats Phelps in 1st showdown at trials

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) ? Ryan Lochte still has Michael Phelps' number.

Phelps, though, has put himself in position to go for another gaudy number: eight gold medals at the London Olympics.

Lochte won his latest showdown with the winningest Olympian ever, beating Phelps for the first time in the 400-meter individual medley at the U.S. swimming trials Monday night.

In taking the first spot on the Olympic team, Lochte extended his dominance of Phelps that goes back to last year's world championships, where the 27-year-old Floridian won five gold medals and both head-to-head races against Phelps.

"The first race is always the hardest," Lochte said. "I can take a deep breath now, relax and whatever happens, happens."

Phelps started strong on the butterfly leg, his best stroke, but Lochte took command when they switched to the breaststroke. He built a lead of about a half-body length and held off Phelps in the freestyle finish, cruising to the wall with one arm extended to post a time of 4 minutes, 7.06 seconds.

He got a kiss from his dad, Steve, as he came off the deck and a huge cheer from the crowd of more than 11,000 ? including a group behind the starting block that waved "Ryan" signs and giant cardboard cutouts of his face.

Phelps claimed the second Olympic spot in 4:07.89, setting himself up for another eight-event program in London ? something he insisted he wouldn't do again after the Beijing Games.

"I was very pleased with that," Phelps said. "I said if I went 4:07, I'd be happy."

Tyler Clary, who took second at the 2011 worlds, won't even get a chance to swim the event in London. He faded to third in 4:09.92 and was so upset he didn't bother stopping by the mixed zone.

Phelps plans to retire after the Olympics and is clearly eager to end his career with another dazzling performance. He already has won 14 gold medals, more than any other athlete.

That he is even swimming the 400 IM shows Phelps has regained the focus and dedication that faded away after the 2008 Olympics. At those games, he won his second straight gold medal in the grueling race, then insisted he was done with it. Over the past few months, however, he quietly put the event back in his repertoire ? and now he'll be swimming it again in London.

Going forward at the trials, Phelps will be heavily favored to claim a spot on the U.S. Olympic team in four other individual events: the 100 and 200 butterfly, 200 free and 200 individual medley. If he swims on all three American relays, as expected, that adds up to eight ? the number of golds he captured in 2008 to eclipse Mark Spitz's iconic Olympic record.

"Now we kind of know where he is and we feel pretty good about it," Phelps' coach Bob Bowman said. "This is the catalyst for everything else. When this goes well, everything else goes well."

A Beijing repeat? Could be, though it will be much more difficult to win eight events in London.

Lochte is standing in the way this time.

"Obviously, that's some pretty good competition," Bowman said. "He just kicked our (butt)."

Lochte is determined to repeat ? even exceed ? last year's brilliant performance in Shanghai, where he surpassed Phelps as the world's top swimmer. He keeps saying "this is my time," and his first event in Omaha shows he's still the man to beat.

"I'm definitely ready to tear it up in London," said Lochte, who is heading to his third Olympics.

This will be No. 4 for Phelps, who became the first American male swimmer to qualify for a fourth Olympic team. There's plenty of room for improvement before he gets to London, according to Bowman.

"His turns were horrendous," the coach said. "That's 2 seconds there. His breaststroke leg has got to be better. There are any number of things he can work on."

Plus, he'll have plenty of motivation to go faster because of the guy he's chasing. Phelps is surely getting tired of losing to Lochte, who now has the upper hand in the 400 IM after beating his rival in the 200 IM and 200 free at the 2011 worlds.

Before Monday, Phelps had whipped Lochte nine straight times in the longer medley race going back to 2002.

"We knew that (losing) was a distinct possibility in this event," Bowman said. "I don't think we had any illusions. He knows that he's in the range. He knows he can get better."

In other finals on the opening night of the trials, Peter Vanderkaay became a three-time Olympian by winning the 400 free, while 19-year-old Elizabeth Beisel earned her second straight trip to the Olympics in the 400 individual medley.

Vanderkaay won with a time of 3:47.67, while hard-charging Conor Dwyer settled for the second spot on the Olympic team in 3:47.83.

"I just tried to get my head down and get my hand on the touchpad," Vanderkaay said. "Both Conor and I were able to do that and punched our tickets" for London.

Beisel won her event easily in 4:31.74, more than 2 seconds ahead of Caitlin Leverenz.

"This is definitely a big confidence boost," the winner said. "Before the race, I was a mess. I was so nervous. I'm so glad it's over and went well. No complaints."

Dana Vollmer, a 2004 Olympian who failed to qualify for the Olympic team four years ago, set an American record in the semifinals of the 100 butterfly. The defending world champion put up a blistering time of 56.42 to edge the mark she set a year ago (56.47).

Brendan Hansen also was impressive in the semifinals. The former world-record holder broke a minute in the 100 breaststroke, going into Tuesday night's final as the top qualifier. Eric Shanteau, who competed in Beijing after being diagnosed with testicular cancer, also advanced.

"I went out there and hit the first five strokes and I was like, 'I'm gone, later,' and just took off," said Hansen, who quit after Beijing but returned to the pool looking to make up for disappointments at the last two Olympics. "You have no idea how hard it is to break a minute."

Lochte and Phelps got a bit of a shock during their race when flames leaped up from the side of the pool ? part of the pyrotechnics that organizers put in place to jazz up the event. They were only supposed to go off beforehand, but someone set them off inadvertently while the swimmers were doing the breaststroke.

"I'm like, 'What's going on?'" Lochte said with a smile.

But he never slowed down.

Asia stocks down after Spain asks for bank bailout

(AP) ? Asian stock markets fell Tuesday, a day after Spain formally requested help to rescue its ailing banks and investors lost hope that an upcoming summit of European leaders would yield meaningful results.

Investors already worried about an economic slowdown in the U.S. and China were preparing for the European leaders to disappoint at their June 28-29 gathering in Brussels.

"Another day, another bout of global jitters about the state of the European Union. Overnight we saw equities on both sides of the Atlantic sold off heavily," Cameron Peacock of IG Markets in Melbourne said in a market commentary.

Japan's Nikkei 225 index fell 0.9 percent to 8,657.90 and South Korea's Kospi was 0.3 percent lower at 1,820.12. Australia's S&P/ASX 200 lost 0.5 percent to 4,008.10. Hong Kong's Hang Seng Index was nearly unchanged at 18,896.45.

Benchmarks in Singapore, Taiwan and mainland China fell. The Philippines and Indonesia rose.

Among the most pressing issues at the EU summit will be how to ease some of Greece's austerity terms now that it has elected a government in favor of its international bailout. Officials in both Athens and Brussels say the current deficit reduction targets are unrealistic. But giving Greece more time to make budget cuts could mean giving it more money to finance its debt. Several European countries are reluctant to do that.

Anxiety over Spain escalated Monday, when the country formally asked other euro countries for rescue loans for its banks, which are reeling from the collapse of the country's real estate sector.

The amount and terms will be agreed on July 9. Two international audits have estimated that Spain's banks could need up to ?62 billion ($77.7 billion).

Meanwhile, credit ratings agency Fitch on Monday downgraded Cyprus to "junk" status, prompted by the amount of rescue money that would be needed to bail out its banks which are heavily exposed to the troubled Greek economy. The country's benchmark stock index slumped 7.2 percent to 145.76 points on the downgrade.

The unanswered questions surrounding Spain and Greece made for a high-risk environment that left little appetite for aggressive investing in stocks, analysts said.

"The volumes are low, I think, because the market generally trades rationally and institutional and longer-term investors won't go into the market at the moment because the clarity or visibility three to six months from now is very low," said Benjamin Collett, head of Japanese equities at Louis Capital Markets in Hong Kong.

Japanese exporters, which are vulnerable to economic turbulence in Europe, slumped. Yamaha Motor Co. tumbled 4.4 percent and Sharp. Corp. fell 3.9 percent. Sony Corp. lost 3.4 percent.

Steelmakers across Asia also fell. South Korea's POSCO shed 2.2 percent and Japan's Nippon Steel Corp. dropped 2.8 percent.

Stocks on Wall Street were rattled Monday by Spain's request for a loan for its banks. The Dow Jones industrial average fell 1.1 percent to close at 12,502.66. The Standard & Poor's 500 index fell 1.6 percent to 1,313.72. The Nasdaq composite fell 1.9 percent to 2,836.16.

Benchmark crude was down 30 cents to $78.91 in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The contract fell 55 cents to close at $79.21 in New York on Monday.

In currencies, the euro rose to $1.2502 from $1.2495 late Monday in New York. The dollar fell to 79.52 yen from 79.68 yen.

WHITEAP

Though the NFL?s in-house appeal process doesn?t amount to a full-blown legal proceeding, the players accused of participating in the Saints? bounty program could escape responsibility on the same basis that plenty of criminal defendants do.

By relying on a technicality.

As Article 46 of the Collective Bargaining Agreement goes, there aren?t many technicalities in the appeal process.? Here?s one of them, from Article 46, Section (f)(ii):? ?In appeals under Section 1(a), the parties shall exchange copies of any exhibits upon which they intend to rely no later than three (3) calendar days prior to the hearing.? Failure to timely provide any intended exhibit shall preclude its introduction at the hearing.?

Key language:? Failure to timely provide any intended exhibit shall preclude its introduction at the hearing.

Key word:? Shall.

As every law student learns when studying ?civil procedure? (i.e., the rules for litigating cases), the word ?shall? always should (or, I suppose, ?shall?) be regarded as a red flag.? It conveys a mandatory requirement.? No discretion.? No exceptions.? No wiggle room.

Here, failure to deliver the exhibits on time ?shall? prevent them from being used at the hearing.

Commissioner Roger Goodell previously scheduled the hearing in the bounty case for 10:00 a.m. ET on Monday, June 18.? The NFL delivered its packet of 16 exhibits to the NFLPA at roughly 1:30 p.m. ET on Friday, June 15.

Three calendar days prior to the hearing translates, in the normal sense of the term, to at least 72 hours before the hearing.? Actually, it could reasonably be argued that the exhibits were due by 11:59 p.m. on Thursday, June 14, since that would have given the players ?three calendar days? (Friday, Saturday, and Sunday) to digest the evidence and prepare accordingly.

So by failing to deliver the materials before 10:00 a.m. ET on Friday, June 15, the plain language of the CBA (i.e., ?shall?) prevents the materials from being introduced at the hearing.

Since the NFL?s entire cases consisted of the 16 exhibits plus comments from outside counsel Mary Jo White regarding their meaning, the failure to deliver the documents by 10:00 a.m. ET on June 15 could get all suspensions thrown out by a court that eventually reviews Commissioner Roger Goodell?s inevitable decision to uphold the penalties he previously crafted.

Is it a harsh outcome?? It sure is.? But it?s the outcome that the CBA mandates if the exhibits aren?t delivered on time, and it?s an outcome that easily could have been avoided by determining the earliest possible point at which the three-day window may close and making sure that the exhibits were in the hands of the NFLPA before that moment.

Thousands of lawyers throughout the country routinely apply that concept in a wide variety of proceedings and contexts.? The fact that the NFL has full control over the appeal process doesn?t mean that the NFL has the power to disregard the clear, unambiguous terms of the limited rules that apply.

Despite a report that the players asked for the hearings to be adjourned in order to have the benefit of the full 72 hours, the official transcript indicates that NFL general counsel Jeff Pash delayed the hearing to ensure compliance with the rule.? But if any delay in the commencement of the hearing time can be used to cure the failure to deliver the exhibits on a timely basis, the clear consequences of the rule can be avoided in any hearing in which the NFL delivered the exhibits late.? Regardless of when the exhibits were tendered, the Commissioner can simply press the pause button until the 72-hour window between the disclosure of the exhibits and the start of the hearing has passed.

That?s probably not what the rules envision.? And whoever failed to ensure that the exhibits were delivered at least 72 hours before the start of Monday?s hearing probably will be spending some time in the coming weeks and months gnawing on Tums while obsessing over the manner in which this one may play out.

Socialist election sweep gives Hollande clear mandate to push eurozone growth

The Socialist party and its allies garnered more than enough seats for an absolute majority in parliament, allowing French President Fran?ois Hollande to pursue his policies full-throttle.

The French Socialists and President Fran?ois Hollande won a resounding victory in the final round of parliamentary elections last night, giving Mr. Hollande a clear field to champion growth policies during a euro crisis that has emphasized German-led austerity.

The Socialists and affiliates won some 300-307 seats in the National Assembly, far exceeding the 289 required for an outright majority, and giving the Socialists, a party declared moribund four years ago, its best position in France since the 1980s.

?Full Power for Mr. Hollande,? the banner head in Le Monde shouted out today.

Socialist senior ministers said today they would immediately roll up their sleeves to implement a delicate mixture of cuts and tax reforms to achieve both a balanced budget and more support for jobs and schools.

Hollande, elected May 6, has already tweaked France?s new age-62 retirement policy to allow those starting work at 18 to retire at 60, for example. But the new government has largely waited on the result of two rounds of lower house elections this month to swing into action. ?

The election outcome leaves the Socialists with the presidency, the senate and the lower house, as well as 21 of 22 regions and many of the largest cities.?In addition, Socialist allies, including the Green party, surged to some 20 seats, making them proportionally the biggest winner of yesterday's poll.

?It was important to offer Hollande a large majority to make concrete the results of the presidential elections,? Socialist lawmaker J?r?me Guedj said last night as the results became clear.

The French right, represented mainly by former president Nicolas Sarkozy's United Movement for a Popular Front, tallied between 215-221 seats.?

New ruling party interior minister Manuel Valls vowed that no time will be wasted in moving forward.

"We need to sort out this country's finances, to ensure we achieve a balanced budget by 2017, and at the same time pursue our priorities in terms of growth, employment, education, and security," he said, according to Reuters.

?Other notable election outcomes:

  • The far right National Front of Marine Le Pen won its first seats (2) since the 1980s, with one going to Ms. Le Pen?s niece, law student Marion Marechal-Le Pen. But the flamboyant Ms. Le Pen lost her bid for a seat in a closely contested race in Henin-Beaumont, a former mining region in the north. The National Front won 18 percent in the presidential race and is now the No. 3 party here.
  • Former Socialist presidential candidate S?gol?ne Royal lost a bitterly contested seat in La Rochelle. Ms. Royal, the former partner of Hollande and mother of his children, sought the seat over and against a popular local Socialist who refused to step aside. While the Socialist establishment, including Hollande, supported Royal, Hollande's current partner, Valerie Trierweiler, last week Tweeted her support of Royal's opponent, setting off a wave of media reaction and cafe-chat intrigue here.
  • Francois Bayrou, leader of France?s main centrist party Modem, was not restored to his seat. Mr. Bayrou was a popular figure on the center-right in 2007, but analysts say he might have been harmed by his endorsement of Hollande in the presidential run-off and his criticism of Mr. Sarkozy?s play for far-right voters during the presidential campaign.

Parties are worlds apart on how to fix economy

(AP) ? Millions of Americans are desperate for work, runaway government spending clouds the future and Democratic and Republican candidates are busy making one thing clear: They're light years apart on what to do about it.

They do agree that in this election, the economy is everything. President Barack Obama calls it "the defining issue of our time." But for voters wishing Washington would come together in a time of crisis, Obama, his Republican rival Mitt Romney and their congressional allies don't offer much hope

Instead, they've taken to describing the gulf on economic policy in galactic terms. Romney must be "on a different planet," an Obama adviser declares. The president is "living in an alternative universe," the Republican Party chief says.

On planet Republican: The economy is backsliding, and the president is to blame. His stimulus spending did more harm than good, and his big-government rules are strangling businesses. The answer is repealing health care, energy and financial regulations and cutting taxes. That should spark investment and create jobs. Tackling the deficit requires huge spending cuts, just not at the Pentagon. The unsustainable guarantee of Medicare and Medicaid must change.

In the Democratic universe: The economy's slowly improving, thanks to government spending that helped fend off a depression. Another dose of targeted spending will help. Republican policies in the Bush administration ? cutting taxes and eliminating rules ? brought on the financial crisis and budget deficits. The rich should help dig us out by paying higher taxes. The Pentagon's budget must be cut, but entitlement spending can be controlled without drastically altering the social safety net.

"These two positions are almost diametrically opposed to each other," said Sung Won Sohn, a California State University economics professor. "And there's no common ground it seems."

They can't both be right.

How do voters decide which economic world they're living in?

You could try asking an economist.

Republicans and Democrats alike offer up prominent names ? many still arguing the supply-siders versus Keynesian debates that heated up during the Reagan administration. Did President George W. Bush's tax cuts boost the economy or just pile up more debt? Was Obama's $831 billion stimulus worthwhile or wasted money?

"Our economy is too complex, too complicated. No one knows for sure what the right answer is," Sohn said. "Economists are the first ones to admit we've been wrong many, many times."

This time, the stakes are high.

Recovery from the financial meltdown and 2007-2009 recession has been slow. Not even half of the 8.8 million jobs that were lost have come back. States and cities are still laying off workers. Unemployment hovers at 8.2 percent. Even for those with jobs, wages and net worth haven't recovered. Europe's troubles pose new threats.

More problems are ahead: Annual deficits of more than a trillion dollars per year have piled up $15.7 trillion in national debt. The crush of baby boomer retirees over the next two decades threatens to ruin the nation's finances, unless politicians slow spending on Medicare and Social Security.

Anxiety about the mushrooming national debt, exacerbated by bank bailouts and stimulus spending, fueled the tea party movement that helped Republicans win control of the House in 2010. That set off a series of showdowns with Obama over taxes, spending and the federal debt ceiling.

The ongoing brinkmanship has unsettled Wall Street investors, business owners timid about hiring and plenty of voters, too. Three-quarters of Americans say the federal government is too divided along party lines. Only 20 percent think it can usually work together to get things done, according to a Pew Research Center poll conducted in April.

A glimmer of Washington cooperation would make a big difference for the economy right now, said Mark Zandi, chief economist at Moody's Analytics.

"If they could signal that they would be willing to work together to do something substantive and helpful," he said, "it could ease the collective psyche and help soothe nerves."

So far, no one's signaling a congressional kumbaya to come after the November elections.

Instead, Obama is telling voters they can break the stalemate by electing Democrats. That's a longshot ? an Obama win would be unlikely to sweep Democrats into control of the House. If elected, Romney is considered more likely to enjoy a kindred Congress. But Democrats would probably hold onto enough Senate seats to impede Romney's agenda under that chamber's rules.

Times of war bring the nation together; maybe economic peril can do the same. Are voters scared enough to push for action?

"People like low taxes. People like small government," said David Wyss, former chief economist for Standard & Poor's. "But then they want their Social Security and Medicare, and a strong Defense Department, and getting the airport and the roads built in their city. Nobody's willing to tell them they can't have it both ways."

Sohn, who's been following these debates since serving as an economist for Richard Nixon's White House, said the problems are too dire this time to allow politicians to hide behind their partisan differences.

"In this situation, the worst thing you can do is to cause gridlock by trying to stick to your economic philosophy," he said. "We want to make sure the economic ship stays afloat. If the ship sinks, all this argument is for naught."

Toyota's newest electric car is just for the kids

How can we get the next generation driving clean, green electric cars? Toyota thinks it has come up with a creative solution of its own, rolling out a new three-seat electric concept car that the kiddos can drive.

It?s a question we?ve thought a lot about, but Toyota thinks it has come up with a solution, with a new three-seat electric concept car that your kids can drive.?

As Automotive News (subscription required) details, the tiny car was unveiled this week at the Tokyo Toy Show, and measures 106 inches long, 51 inches wide and 47 inches high.

That?s actually a little longer and wider than the road-legal 2012 Renault Twizy we tested in Ibiza earlier this year. Unlike the Twizy however, the Toyota Camatte isn?t road legal.

Powered by a lead-acid battery and small electric motor, Toyota says the Camatte can reach a top speed of 25 mph, about 20 mph faster than the toy ride-on electric cars you can buy at the local toy store and fast enough to give most parent a panic attack.

With that in mind, Toyota has thought about safety with an unusual feature that will gain it some parental approval: back-seat driver function.

If you?re able to squeeze yourself into one of the two offset rear seats behind the centrally-positioned drivers? seat, rear-seat parental controls allow you to provide assisted braking and steering when needed.?

While the Toyota Camatte may only be a concept car at present, Toyota, like many other automakers, is seriously looking at using high-end, high-ticket toys to encourage children of more affluent patrons to stick with the brand when they are old enough to drive their own car.?

We have to admit we like the Camatte?s retro-styled charm and zero-emissions drivetrain, but would you buy one for your kid?

Suu Kyi: Nobel Prize 'made me real once again'

Cathal Mcnaughton / Reuters

Myanmar opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi signs a book at the Nobel Institute after a meeting with the Norwegian Nobel Committee in Oslo on Saturday.

By msnbc.com news services

Updated at 8:40 a.m ET: OSLO, Norway --?Myanmar opposition leader and international democracy icon Aung San Suu Kyi finally accepted her 1991 Nobel Peace Prize in Oslo on Saturday after spending a total of 15 years under house arrest. ?

In the speech, Suu Kyi said full political freedom in her country was still a long way off, and?talked about the isolation she felt during the years under house arrest. She said the prize had "made me real once again ? it had drawn attention to the struggle for democracy in Burma," according to Germany's Deutsche Welle.

Suu Kyi, the Oxford University-educated daughter of General Aung San, Myanmar's assassinated independence hero, also advocated caution about transformation in Myanmar, whose quasi-civilian government continues to hold political prisoners.?

"Absolute peace in our world is an unattainable goal," Suu Kyi said in her acceptance speech during her first trip to Europe in nearly 25 years.?

"Hostilities have not ceased in the far north; to the west, communal violence resulting in arson and murder were taking place just several days before I started out the journey that has brought me here today," she said.

Large crowds welcome Suu Kyi as she travels Thailand during world tour

"There still remain such prisoners in Burma. It is to be feared that because the best known detainees have been released, the remainder, the unknown ones, will be forgotten," Suu Kyi, 66, told a packed Oslo City Hall.?

A day earlier, she arrived from Switzerland to a jubilant reception as dancing and chanting crowds filled Oslo's streets and showered her with flowers.?

Suu Kyi never left Myanmar even during brief periods of freedom after 1989, afraid the military would not let back in.?

Her sons, Kim and Alexander had accepted the Nobel prize on her behalf in 1991, with her husband Michael Aris also attending the ceremony. A year later Suu Kyi announced she would use the $1.3 million prize money to establish a health and education trust for Burmese people.?

She was unable to be with Aris, an Oxford academic, when he was diagnosed with prostate cancer and died in Britain in 1999.?

Earlier, Norwegian government leaders said they have eagerly awaited Saturday's speech at Oslo City Hall since Suu Kyi won the world's highest diplomatic honor in 1991. But Suu Kyi said she never doubted that she would travel one day to Oslo to give her honorific lecture.

"Yes of course, I always believed that. That's why I have always said that the first time I traveled abroad I would come to Norway," she said in answer to a reporter's question. "I never doubted that. Did you?"

Switzerland was the first stop on a planned two-week tour of Europe also taking in Ireland, Britain and France. The journey is her first in Europe since 1988, the year she left her husband and two young sons in England to visit her ill mother back home -- and became the focal point for the country's nascent democracy movement.

Before accepting the prize, a tired-looking, rarely smiling Suu Kyi appeared to be recovering from falling ill on Thursday.

"We are not at the end of the road, by no means, we are just starting out," she said on Friday.?

She both warned that her country's political transformation was not irreversible and the military had to give up its excessive powers and?rejected a suggestion that her aim was to dismantle the military.?

"I have never thought that I was doing anything against the military, I've always said I want the military, the army to be an honorable, professional army that is respected by the people," Suu Kyi said at a press conference with Norwegian Prime Minister Jens Stoltenberg on Friday.

Myanmar refugees flee in rickety boats after sectarian clashes

"I fight against what is dangerous for the democratic process and the military having the kind of powers that they shouldn't have certainly endangers the democratic process," said Suu Kyi.

For the first time in nearly a quarter century, Myanmar's opposition leader, Aung San Suu Kyi, has left her country for a journey overseas, first to Bangkok and later to Europe. NBC's Ian Williams reports.

Suu Kyi's 17-day European trip has been clouded by sectarian violence between Rakhine Buddhists and stateless Muslim Rohingyas, testing Myanmar's 15-month-old government.

On Friday, a fragile peace held in the wake of days of that has stoked nationalist fervor and displaced 30,000 people and killed 29 by government accounts.

The government has made peace and unity among Myanmar's many ethnic groups its mantra and has struck ceasefire deals with minority Karen, Shan, Mon and Chin rebels, among others, after decades of hostilities.

But there is entrenched, long-standing animosity between Rakhine Buddhists and around 800,000 Muslim Rohingyas, who mostly live in abject conditions and who still do not possess citizenship.

How Energy Drink Company GungHo Tapped the Power of ...

In interviewed GungHo energy drink company?s Danny Mason about their successful product launch. I was looking for a story about Pinterest and video, happened on their press release and stumbled on a great story. The company made a profit despite giving away free product because friends of friends signed up for the company?s autoship program.

Images are Shared More than Video

With the rise of Pinterest and Instamgram, image sharing has become one of the biggest social media trends of the year?video and YouTube, less so. According to StruckAxiom, images are shared 11 times more often than video.

Videos Not Getting Pinned

Pinterest lets you pin videos from Vimeo and YouTube. However, looking through the top brands or categories on Pinterest you won?t find a lot of videos being pinned or repinned. Even in the video category there are almost no videos with more than a single repin.

An example of the weakness of video on Pinterest is the beauty retailer Birchbox. On Pinterest, Birchbox has over 22,000 followers for it?s unboxing video board, but unfortunately they do not have more than a single repin on any of their videos.

With these numbers, it might be surprising to know that Birchbox does well on YouTube. They have over 11,000 active subscribers on their YouTube channel, and close to a million views. Yet, when these same videos are pinned, the Pinterest community doesn?t visibly engage (though, undoubtedly their Pinterest fans help their overall YouTube viewing numbers).

Reasons Video is Not Shared as Often as Images

Mason, co-founder of GungHo, sites 3 possible reasons for why people don?t share videos as often as images:

  1. People are not sure what the video is before they click it.
  2. People are not sure what their time commitment will be to watch the video.
  3. People are not sure they will want to share the video.

Aware of the challenges of getting people to share video, Danny found a way to combine video marketing with Pinterest marketing.

Tapping into YouTube Communities to Drive Social Sharing

Instead of incentivizing people to pin videos on Pinterest and hoping for the best, Danny tapped into the power of a YouTube community. They invited YouTube viewers to go to a landing page for a special offer for sharing their funny ninja images (ninjas are a big part of GungHo?s brand).

GungHo initially thought they were marketing to a younger male demographic, which fit best with YouTube. Their focus was on college students who want extra energy to get through their finals and college courses.

GungHo looked for a YouTube celebrity that could reach both men and women. They found the husband and wife duo, Charles and Ally Trippy. The couple agreed to do a video review of the product. Danny provided an exclusive deal to the Trippy audience, giving free samples to the first 5,000 people to respond.

The Trippy?s shared how they were fans of the ?world?s only energy shot with Ninja-like focus? ?and then provided the exclusive offer to their 760,000 plus viewers. Within 7 hours GungHo had given out all of their 5,000 free samples, beating Orabrush?s YouTube marketing record that moved 10,000 free samples in ten days.

Yet, the success of this launch really wasn?t about how quickly GungHo gave out free samples, or even the power of the Trippy?s YouTube community. The true magic came when all of the Trippy fans hit the GungHo landing page.

Providing Images and Incentives for Sharing

On the landing page people could choose several funny ninja images to share on social sites including Twitter, Facebook, and Pinterest. To entice people to share, the GungHo group promised to provide additional free samples or a steep discount if someone bought product after clicking on one of their ninja images.

The second wave of sharing brought down their website for over an hour. As unfortunate as a crashed website is on a product launch, the massive amount of response GungHo received ?provided some great insights.

Women Engage with Brands More than Men

The first insight they gained was that women were more gung ho than men about sharing on social media sites. According to Danny, almost 60% of the social engagement was from women.

Women also proved to be a valuable contribution to the campaign because they often added their personal endorsement with their shares. These findings made the team re-evaluate their strategy, which included a redesign of their packaging to make it more appealing to women.

?We learned our most vocal advocates are women. Men would just share to get the product. Women would add their comments about it, even though they didn?t have to. Men also tried to game the system? more than women did, stated Danny.

Women Chose to Share on Pinterest

Finally, Go GungHo learned the power of Pinterest. Even though more people used Facebook and Twitter to share, Pinterest users were more active in endorsing the energy shot. Due to this level of engagement, Pinterest outpaced the other social networks when it came to referral traffic.

Video is powerful, though it may not necessarily be in getting pins and repins on Pinterest. Instead, by tapping into the YouTube community Gungho was able to grow all of their social numbers, and get increased engagement from women ? on Pinterest in particular.

The funny images combined with an easy way to share resulted in growing their fan base on every network.

Key Campaign Stats:

  • The GungHo webs site got 69,000 hits within hours. The 5000 free were gone in 23 minutes. The next 5000 (with discount) was gone in under 4 hour live up time (site was down for >1.5 hrs). After 40 minutes when site went down, they turned off the discount. With no barriers to sharing it spread too fast. Only Trippy?s fans got the discount after that.
  • Of the 69,000, over 5,700 bought or got the free sample, but the company had to turn off the viral share piece because they lost money on the $10 discount if they chose the monthly auto-delivery option. They are convinced they would have been wiped out of product if Trippy?s fans? friends got the offer. Trippy?s fans friends just saw the funny image but did NOT get the offer.
  • The buyers from the Trippy?s site was about 59% female.
  • Men tended to share via Facebook and Twitter. The women, via Pinterest.
  • Women shared their endorsement (comments from them vs our pre-populated text in the FB, twitter or Pinterest window). Less than 5% of the time men shared personal endorsement. Over 80% of the women did.
  • Go GungHo got over 1300 new Twitter followers and over 1100 new FB fans in a matter of hours from the Trippy offer. They had almost zero following before (this was our launch campaign).
  • The community loved the offer from the Trippys. They had over 80 tweets, posts or other comments from his fans thanking for the hook-up. We had over 60 comments / reviews on our fan-page (they offered a free 12-pack for the best review).
  • 5778 customers total pinned their image before they turned off the offer. 3409 were women. 2292 of those women chose to pin vs. share on Facebook or Twitter (67% chose pinterest vs FB or twitter). They determined the sex of people sharing by looking at the name of the person.

Have any launch tips or stories of how you successfully leveraged social media or Pinterest? Please share in the comments.

Also look for my next post about GungHo tapping the power of press releases to get media coverage (and how we both got on TV).
