With Romney visit, Israelis worry about becoming a partisan issue

Presidential challenger Mitt Romney is promising to give Israel a freer hand with Iran while President Obama announced $70 million in additional military aid to the country.

US Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney places a note in the Western Wall, Judaism's holiest prayer site July 29. Romney would back Israel if it were to decide it had to use military force to stop Iran from developing a nuclear weapon, a senior aide said on Sunday.

The campaign of the Republican nominee portrayed itself as more aggressive against Iran and more willing to give Israel a free hand in a potential attack than the Obama administration. Meanwhile, the president on Friday announced $70 million in additional military aid to help develop a rocket system to intercept missiles from Gaza and Lebanon. ?

The high profile battle surrounding the state of ties between the allies has inserted Israel into the campaign as never before. But Israeli officials and analysts are anxious about that spotlight, and would prefer to be more of an afterthought. That?s because an election debate over Israel could damage long term ties between they countries by risking the Jewish state's long cultivated bipartisan support in Washington.

"We don?t want to be part of the issue," says an Israeli diplomat, who was not authorized to speak. "We have very strong bi-partisan support and we want to keep it that way. We want there to be strong relations with the US. Not with blue or red." ? ?

Speaking to reporters, Romney foreign policy aide Dan Senor said that if Israel were to launch a lone attack on Iranian nuclear sites, Mr. Romney "would respect that decision," seemingly going further than the Obama administration toward a green light for Israel. ?

Romney is scheduled to make a speech shortly and will hold a fundraising dinner tomorrow morning.?

This is the second presidential election in which the Jewish state has become a campaign stop. In 2008, both Obama and Sen. John McCain took breaks from campaigning in the US to visit here.

Romney's broader critique

But the open bickering between Obama and Prime Minister Netanyahu over the peace process with the Palestinians and how to confront Iran has made support for Israel an issue for debate, and part of Romney?s broader foreign policy critique that the administration has failed to stand behind allies and projected weakness.

Romney?s visit is also seen as an attempt to indirectly highlight the fact that President Obama did not visit Israel in his first four years of office when he visited other American allies in the Muslim world, stirring up criticism from some Israelis.

"Romney feels that the president may be somewhat vulnerable. Romney may sense that there is some Israeli dismay at some Obama policies and sees an opportunity," said David Horvitz, the editor of the Times of Israel news website. "Unfortunately, Israel has become an issue of greater partisan debate than it used to?. That?s tremendously to Israel?s detriment."

Product Review of the Panasonic VIERA TC-L32C5

The Panasonic VIERA TC-L32C5 was one of the high definition televisions introduced in the new Panasonic VIERA product line up. This HDTV is in the C5 generation product series. It has a 32'' inch screen with wide view angles capability. The technology used to make this television is LCD. The Panasonic has an aspect ratio of 16:9 ensuring good quality images. It is able to play high resolution videos and externally stored media such as photos seamlessly via its USB port. The HDTV also packs two HDMI ports for the streaming of high resolution video content from set top boxes, cam coders, cameras, tablet computers and high end smart phones.

The Panasonic VIERA TC-L32C5 comes with a game mode and an Eco mode. The Eco mode is a mode where the brightness of the HDTV is automatically adjusted in accordance to the HDTV operating status. The Eco mode is all about saving energy and in this respect it can turn the HDTV off when certain preset conditions have been established.

The Game mode on the other hand allows you to get most out of the HDTV. The VIERA automatically adjusts the settings to allow you to get a quality image even as the scenes change.

The Panasonic VIERA TC-L32C5 detects the brightness of the room that it is in and the adjusts its brightness correspondingly. This system is known as the Contrast Automatic Tracking System or simply CATS and contributes significantly to lower power consumption in the HDTV.

Although the Panasonic VIERA TC-L32C5 has a screen resolution of 720p it is capable of playing high resolution videos of about 1080p. It packs the following native resolution: 1366px native resolution (X) or the width and 768px in height (native resolution Y) bringing the total number of pixels to approximately 1,049,088. The HDTV dimensions are 30.7 inches width, a depth of 9.9 inches, and height of 21.5 inches. The screen thus has a viewing angle of approximately 180 degrees. The standard color of the Panasonic VIERA TC-L32C5 is black and it weighs about 22 pounds. The Operating temperature is between32 degrees Fahrenheit and 95 degrees Fahrenheit.

In addition to the USB 2.0 and 2 HDMI ports discussed above, the Panasonic has composite video input RCA port, PC input (15 pin D-sub) also of the RCA type. It packs an analog audio input for the HDMI which comes in the form of a mini jack. This is in addition to the RCA audio input that is bundled with the composite video. Other port are the component video input (Y, PB PR) and its accompanying audio component and finally a digital audio output. Digital media format support is included fo the JPEG and MP3 standards for picture and audio respectively.

On of the pros of the Panasonic VIERA TC-L32C5 are its intelligent scene controller which renders images in a smooth manner and the CATS system which automatically adjusts its brightness in accordance to the room brightness. Cons include the support of just one digital format for pictures and also the limited support of audio format which is simply discouraging as you have to convert all your audio files to the MP3 format before they are able to play on the HDTV.

Denver County Fair extends competition deadlines

Zachary Byron Helm sets up his booth at the 2011 Denver County Fair.

Hey makers of pies, potions, pinatas and Peeps dioramas: You?ve got a little longer to register your creations online for the Denver County Fair?s bajillion competitions.

There?s a contest for molded gelatin desserts. Artist trading cards. Fishing flies. And robots, shoes and preserved food. Plus all the usual county-fair categories you?d expect.

That new deadline for online entries for the ?Blue Ribbon Competitions? is Tuesday. But if you?re not an advance-planning type of person, there?ll still be plenty of opportunity to win ribbons in the fair?s live competitions, such as pie eating, the Social Media Smackdown, Supper Hollerin? and the High Rollers Adult Big Wheel Races. The fair itself is Aug. 10-12 at the National Western Complex, 4655 Humboldt St.

Last year?s first fair had headliners Devo. This year, the lineup mines the 303, 720 and maybe the 970: Wheelchair Sports Camp; Fiction is Fun; Jimbo Darville & the Truckadours; Mile High Banjo Society; and Total Ghost, among others. The Tribute to Tribute Bands line-up includes The West (a three-piece with an Elvis Costello fixation); Journey Girls (a mother-daughter Journey tribute) and Jennifer?s Body (a Courtney Love/Hole tribute outfit). And then there?s Ukulele Loki?s Gadabout Orchestra.

Pie judging at the 2011 Denver County Fair

Even Dora the Explorer will turn up on Aug. 12 at the kids pavilion from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Magic Cyclops ? yes, he of the 11,000 air guitars and ?American Idol? fame - will not only perform, he?s signed up to DJ the Zombie Dance Party Aug. 11. Drag queen Nuclia Waste, last year?s Miss Denver County Fair, will MC this year?s pageant to hand down her crown.

Organizers Dana Cain and Tracy Weil said they?ve tried to bump up what worked (a lot, they believe; 90 percent of survey respondents said they?d be back) and fix what folks critcized last year (mainly, the food and the heat). Carnival rides will be in an indoor arena, and a food-truck roundup will keep revelers fueled. Morning chow lines will include Andrew Novick?s X-Treme Pancake Breakfast Aug. 11 (10 a.m.-1 p.m., an hour longer than last year) and his X-Treme Breakfast Burritos Aug. 12 (same times).

Cain?s favorite new element this year is the Geek Pavilion, home to live Scrabble and other contests, robot battles, and an Unsinkable Molly Brown Dunk Tank hosted by the Colorado Steampunks and the Molly Brown House Museum (which not only approved of the idea, but helped fund the tank rental).

WASHINGTON (AP) ? President Barack Obama raised nearly $2.5 million Friday at three fundraising events, including one where he crossed paths with President Bill Clinton. The other two were hosted by a Virginia businessman and philanthropist who helped hundreds of struggling Americans attend Obama's inaugural in 2009.

Obama met Clinton at a hotel where Obama was attending an intimate fundraiser with 25 donors that brought in $1 million for his re-election bid. Clinton was there hosting a fundraiser for Rep. John Lewis, the Democratic congressman from Georgia. The White House said the two presidents had the opportunity to say hello.

Later, Obama flew on Marine One to nearby McLean, Va., for two separate events at the home of Earl W. Stafford, an Obama supporter who in 2009 spent $1.6 million so that homeless and jobless people and wounded soldiers could attend Obama's inaugural and its celebratory balls.

Those two events combined raised at least $1.4 million.

Obama, addressing about 270 at a reception in Stafford's house, stuck to his economic themes and said his rival Mitt Romney wants to provide more tax cuts for the wealthiest Americans and would do so by gutting investments in education, infrastructure and health care.

"This is not a recipe for long-term growth," Obama said.

Speaking to a largely black audience at the reception, Obama said he understood the struggles they've faced building a better life for their families and that he would fight for them if re-elected.

"I know where you've been because that's where I've been," he said.

The events capped a week in which the president tapped donors in four states: California, Oregon, Washington and Louisiana. His estimated total from that fundraising swing was at least $7 million.

For the Dow, another blast past the 13,000 mark

The Dow pulverized the 13,000 mark on Friday, soaring not only through it but finishing 75 points above it.

It was a target the Dow hadn't hit since early May. It was also a reminder of earlier heydays, before the financial crisis shattered the stock market. It meant the Dow was just an 8 percent rally away from its all-time high reached in October 2007.

And to many professional market watchers, it was just a big yawn.

"We've gone up through it before and down through it before," said an unimpressed Jim Millstein, CEO of the financial advisory firm Millstein & Co. in Washington, D.C. "It's obviously not insulation against any future volatility."

"It's only 30 stocks," added Mitch Schlesinger, chief investment officer at FBB Capital Partners in Maryland.

No matter how you feel about the Dow, here's more information to help you understand what happened Friday.

?WHAT IS THE DOW? The Dow refers to the Dow Jones industrial average. It's an index of 30 stocks, all of them big, well-known companies like Microsoft and General Electric. It's supposed to give investors a general sense of how the overall stock market is doing.

?WHAT'S SPECIAL ABOUT 13,000? It's a key milestone. The very first time the Dow crossed that mark was in April 2007, in what seemed like go-go days for the U.S. economy. It reached an all-time high of 14,164.53 that October. But it steadily declined for months afterward, and when it crossed below 13,000 in May 2008, it didn't return to that level for nearly four years.

?WHAT HAPPENED THEN? The Dow closed above 13,000 again on Feb. 28 of this year, and it flitted above that level for most of the next two months. Until Friday, the last time it closed above 13,000 was May 7.

?WHAT DOES IT MEAN? The psychological effect can be important. When investors see the Dow pass a big, round number, it can make them feel better about the economy and thus more willing to spend and invest.

Like the rest of the stock market, the Dow tracks how traders feel more than it tracks the underlying fundamentals of the economy. The fact that it's above 13,000 doesn't erase deep concerns about sluggish economic growth or high unemployment rates in the U.S.

?WHAT WILL HAPPEN THIS TIME? That's anyone's guess, but the last rally was short-lived. The Dow peaked for the year at 13,279 on May 1. Then, spooked by a dismal jobs report, it plunged 444 points in the following six trading days, bringing it back below 13,000.

Tweet this: Study finds limits to new 'Twiplomacy'

(AP) ? Almost two-thirds of world leaders have joined the Twitterverse where President Barack Obama and his tweet on gay marriage are the most popular to date, says a new study Thursday.

But the rise in so-called "Twiplomacy" resembles something of an echo chamber, according to an analysis of 264 government accounts in 125 countries that the PR firm Burson-Marsteller describes as the first-ever global study of world leaders on Twitter.

Some 264 world leaders now have a Twitter account, and the researchers believe that 30 of them do their own tweeting. Altogether they have sent more than 350,000 tweets to almost 52 million followers, the study shows.

But about a third of them don't follow each other and dozens of them don't even follow any other Twitterers. But that doesn't mean they don't converse. More than nine of every 10 tweets by the Ugandan prime minister and the Rwandan president are replies, the study says.

World leaders tweet in 43 languages, with English favored by 90 of the accounts. Spanish is the next most-used, with 41 accounts, French is third with 25 accounts and Arabic fourth with 17 accounts.

"Sixteen of the G-20 leaders are actively using Twitter for public diplomacy, but it is sad to see that the heads of state and government in China, Saudi Arabia, Indonesia and Italy still have not joined the Twitterverse," said Matthias Luefkens of Burson-Marteller in Geneva. "What is really interesting is how the world is divided into English and Spanish tweets."

The data, gathered in July, looked at more than 30 variables such as tweets, retweets and hashtags. Luefkens said Twitter was not involved in any way in the study.

The most-followed account is (at)BarackObama, which is run by the Obama campaign and has 17.8 million followers. Of those followers 76 are the president's peers and other governments. Obama rarely sends his own tweets, but when he does he signs them, as he did in one to the first lady on Valentine's Day, Luefkens says.

A May 9 tweet sent by the campaign team quoting Obama as saying "same-sex couples should be able to get married" is the most re-tweeted to date ? more than 62,000 times.

Twitter is often used by politicians during election campaigns whose accounts go silent once they are elected, the study says, citing Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff and French President Francois Hollande as examples.

5 Things to Consider When Finding an MLM for a Home Based ...

When you?re looking for a home based business opportunity there are numerous opportunities available to you on the internet.

Generally sales letters and squeeze pages seem to appear all over the place, and one of the most lucrative and sustainable approaches to starting a home based business is a MLM or Network Marketing business.

These MLM businesses come in many different forms and often come in the shape of nutritional, household, and cosmetic products. however in recent years due to the fact that the internet has superseded many other forms of advertising and direct selling there are many online home based business opportunities that have risen up and taken the world by storm.

Many of these MLM home based opportunities offer fantastic remuneration and many of them offer 100% commissions for their compensation programs. Also these programs and systems offer incredible training facilities, training materials and fabulous products for the marketer to sell on to build their teams, but on the other hand many of them do not. there are a number of important issues that you need to consider before becoming a Network Marketer and joining their programs.

1. Professionalism.

The first thing to consider is the approach of the MLM program you?re considering and the way the program shows itself to you. it may look fantastic to you but will it sell? Take a good look at the sales or squeeze page and work out whether it is as captivating as you first thought it was. Is it fresh, new and exciting and does it have that wow factor?

2. Compensation Package.

Check out the compensation package to see if it is actually worth your while pursuing and getting those all-important leads to sign up for it. Let?s face it if you?re going to pursue becoming a network marketer the rewards are much better received if they are high. Working out a business plan will give you an insight into how you will achieve your goals and ensuring that it is financially viable.

3. What Are People saying?

Follow up the by checking out the internet talk. See what people are saying about the program or system you are considering signing up for. Find out what the hype is, and get the general feel to whether people will actually pursue the MLM program and see it the same way you do.

4. Quality of the Training Materials.

You more than likely will not be able to see what the quality of the materials are like until you actually sign up for the program. however you should be able to get a general gist for the quality of the training you will receive when checking all of the above. Most of the time in this present-day and age the training materials are all based online ready for download rather than being in the form of books and tapes as was the case many years ago.

5. Are You Ready?

Finally comes the point of ?Are You Ready?? Are you going to succeed in the MLM program you?ve chosen to promote? Personally I would say it?s a bit like everything else in life: your success will come from your mind-set.

There are hundreds of home business opportunities out there on the web, but without the correct mind-set you?ll more than likely fail to succeed at any of them as 95% of Marketers often do.

In 2012, the MLM and Network Marketing programs that you can find on the internet are quite amazing. the technology surrounding these home based business opportunities is top-notch and much effort has gone into ensuring that the systems run smoothly, efficiently and above all give everyone the opportunity to make money online that maybe would not have been available a short time ago.

Raw: Olympic torch arrives in London

LONDON (AP) -- The Olympic torch has begun its tour of London - and to everyone's relief, the weather is cooperating.

After weeks of unseasonably chilly temperatures and miserable rain, the sun came out Saturday as thousands of people turned out to watch the flame begin its seven-day trip of the Olympic host city.

The torch arrived late Friday in the city with a dramatic entrance, abseiled from a helicopter by a Royal Marine to the Tower of London on the shore of the River Thames.

After a night locked inside the Jewel House of the 11th century landmark, the torch started a journey through London that took it from a historic ship to a shiny new shopping mall.

From the Royal Observatory in Greenwich, the home of Greenwich Mean Time (GMT), the torch was carried to the Cutty Sark, a newly restored 140-year-old ship docked in the Thames.

Nadia Comaneci, the legendary Romanian gymnast who won nine Olympic medals in the 1976 and 1980 games, and former basketball player John Amaechi took the torch to the roof of the North Greenwich Arena, the venue for the gymnastics events and basketball finals.

"You know it doesn't seem like it's been 36 years ago," Comaneci, the first female gymnast to be awarded a perfect 10 score in an Olympic gymnastics event, told the BBC. "It's hard to believe that what I've done then people still remember. So I'm very honored to be here."

Phillips Idowu, a champion triple jumper for Team Great Britain, later took the torch to the Westfield mall, Europe's biggest, next to the Olympic Park.

Saturday's torch relay also included stints from London's youngest and oldest torchbearers: 12-year-old Chester Chambers, and 101-year-old Fauja Singh. Like most other torchbearers, they were nominated by their communities.

The torch, which has already traveled across Britain for more than 60 days, will continue to tour London's streets until it ends its journey at the Olympic Stadium for the opening ceremony in the capital on July 27.

Afinitor's breast cancer OK could add $1.5B to Novartis sales ...

Novartis ($NVS) has another notch for Afinitor's belt. The drug won a coveted indication in advanced breast cancer, after data showed it improved progression-free survival by an average of 4.6 months. The new use could be a blockbuster on its own: Analysts expect the approval to add $1.5 billion to peak sales.

Approved to treat kidney and pancreatic cancers, Afinitor is the first mTOR inhibitor to win a breast cancer nod. Adding it to Aromasin, a Pfizer ($PFE) aromatase inhibitor, can help overcome treatment resistance that develops with that class of drugs.

In a sense, Afinitor is stepping where Roche's ($RHHBY) Avastin left off, Bloomberg notes. Roche's treatment had its breast cancer approval revoked by FDA last year, after a contentious debate. The company says it's planning a new breast cancer study this year, in a bid to reaffirm Avastin?for that use.

In the meantime, the studies to demonstrate Afinitor's breast-cancer utility are ongoing. Novartis?hopes that it will not only prove that the drug staves off progression, but that it extends patients' lives. Deustche Bank analyst Tim Race said that the data so far is "pointing in the right direction" for an overall survival benefit.

(AP) ? Aurora shooting suspect James Holmes applied to join a Colorado gun range but never became a member after the owner became concerned over his "bizarre" message and behavior.

Owner Glenn Rotkovich says Holmes emailed an application to join the Lead Valley Range in Byers on June 25 and there were no overt warning signs in that form.

Holmes said he was not a user of illegal drugs or a convicted felon, so Rotkovich followed up by calling Holmes' apartment to invite him to a mandatory orientation the following week.

Rotkovich got Holmes' answering machine and says "it was bizarre ? guttural, freakish at best."

Rotkovich left two other messages but eventually told his staff to watch for Holmes at the July 1 orientation and not to accept him into the club.

(AP) ? Riding a wave of momentum, Syrian rebels made a run on Aleppo Saturday in some of the fiercest fighting seen in the country's largest city, which has been a key bastion of support for President Bashar Assad over the course of the 17-month-old uprising.

The rebels also took over a third border crossing ? and the second one along Syria's northeastern frontier with Iraq ? another sign the regime's tight grip on the country is wobbling.

The fighting in Aleppo comes on the heels of intense clashes in the capital, Damascus, as rebel forces target the pillars of regime power in their attempts to usher in what they hope will be the end of Assad's rule.

"There were huge explosions and the gunfire didn't stop for several hours," Aleppo-based activist Mohammad Saeed told The Associated Press via Skype. "The uprising has finally reached Aleppo."

The city has remained largely loyal to Assad and been spared the kind of daily bloodshed that has plagued other areas.

But Saeed said dozens of fighters from the rag-tag Free Syrian Army entered Aleppo ? a commercial hub ? from the countryside and were fighting regime troops from inside.

It was the first sustained fighting in the city center, focused on the Salaheddine district, although there have been protests in Aleppo and violence on the outskirts.

The rebels have put the regime on the defensive after a week of battles in the capital, Damascus, including a bombing that struck at the heart of the regime, killing four high-level government officials. The coming days will be crucial to determining whether the regime can recover from the blows, which have punctured the sense that Assad's hold on the country is impenetrable.

Rebels also took over the Syrian side of the border crossing at the Iraqi town of Rabiya, 520 kilometers (320 miles) northwest of Baghdad, according to Atheel al-Nujaifi, the governor of Iraq's Ninevah province.

Iraqi officials said rebels tore up and shot at posters of Assad but did not face any resistance from regime authorities who surrendered the sprawling, dusty border crossing peacefully. Iraqi officials quickly barricaded the crossing and ordered additional troops to secure the area.

Rebels also seized the Syrian side of the border crossing at the Iraqi border town of Qaim on Thursday. Rebels also attacked a remote Syrian military post near the border on Thursday, killing 21 soldiers, and overran a border checkpoint with Turkey last week.

French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius warned Assad to prepare to leave.

"Bashar Assad's regime is condemned by his own people, who show great courage," Fabius said. "It's time to prepare for the transition and the day after."

He also encouraged the opposition ? which is fractious and beset by infighting ? to unite.

"It's time for the opposition to get started on taking control of the country," he said. "We want the rapid formation of an interim government that will be representative of the diversity of Syrian society."

Damascus and Aleppo are both home to elites who have benefited from close ties to Assad's regime, as well as merchant classes and minority groups who worry their status will suffer if Assad falls.

But for months, rebels have been gaining strength in poorer towns and cities in the Aleppo countryside, gaining footholds near the Turkish border.

Anger has been building inside Aleppo at the government's deadly crackdown on the uprising and in recent months, huge anti-government demonstrations have broken out, particularly among students at Aleppo University.

In May, Syrian forces stormed student dormitories during an anti-government protest at the university, firing tear gas and bullets in an hours-long siege that killed four students and forced the closure of the state-run school.

An amateur video posted online by activists showed Aleppo residents walking with bags of belongings or packing into cars and driving away.

Another video showed protesters pounding an iron bust of Assad's late father, Hafez, with rocks in an attempt to break it. The videos could not be independently verified.

Activists and residents reported relative calm in Damascus on Saturday, although sporadic gunfire and explosions could be heard.

Two residents who did not want to be identified for safety reasons said by telephone that the fighting peaked between 1 a.m. and 3 a.m. local time.

One of the residents said most shops in the capital were closed Saturday and traffic was light.

Authorities have set up checkpoints at the entrances of Damascus in an effort to separate it from rebellious suburbs, and the resident said many grocery stores and vegetable vendors were unable to get supplies.

Piles of rubbish were starting to pile up in many parts of the city.

"The tension is palpable, people are scared about what might be coming," the resident said by telephone from the upscale middle class Mazzeh district. "A lot of people are just staying at home."

The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights and a Damascus-based activist said two people were found dead in the Midan district after regime forces stormed their apartment. The activist, who gave his name as Omar al-Dimashqi, said the pair had been stabbed with knives, but that could not be independently confirmed.

Syrian forces recaptured the battle-scarred neighborhood on Friday and proudly showed reporters the dead bodies of rebel fighters lying in rubble-strewn streets.

The fighting in Damascus has sent thousands of Syrians pouring into neighboring Lebanon and Iraq.

Iraqi officials said about 1,000 nationals had left in eight flights from Damascus over the last two days to escape the escalating civil war. An estimated 5,000 more has poured through a land crossing by Saturday, despite the rebel takeover of a major Syria border post farther north.

Capt. Saad al-Khafaji of the state-owned Iraqi Airways said Iraqi authorities sent four airplanes to Damascus airport Saturday to evacuate Iraqis stranded in the Syrian capital.

"The planes are waiting for Iraqi passengers, but few are showing up at Damascus airport," he said, adding it was due to difficulties in reaching the airport because of the violence.

Also Saturday, U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said he is sending U.N. peacekeeping chief Herve Ladsous to Syria to assess the situation.

The U.N. Security Council unanimously approved a resolution Friday renewing the 300-strong U.N. observer force in Syria for 30 days. The resolution was a lifeline for the unarmed observers who were sent to Syria three months ago to monitor a cease-fire that never happened.

Ban urged all sides to stop the violence, but he singled out the Syrian government, saying it must "stop the killing and the use of heavy weapons against the population centers."

Movie theater gunman had been stockpiling arsenal

[Updated at 8 a.m. EST, July 21]

AURORA, Colo. ? The gunman who blasted his way through a packed movie house early on Friday, killing 12 people and injuring 58 others, had apparently been planning his attack for weeks.

"In the last 60 days he purchased four guns at local metro gun shops, and through the Internet he purchased over 6,000 rounds of ammunition," Aurora Police Chief Daniel Oates said Friday night.

The suspect, 24-year-old former medical student James Holmes, had also been stockpiling magazines to carry the gun ammunition. One clip recovered at the scene could hold 100 rounds for his military-style rifle.

"As far as we know, it was a pretty rapid pace of fire in that theater," said Chief Oates, noting that all the weapons purchases were legal.

Police are trying to learn more about the man's motives but have thus far been unable to access his booby-trapped apartment near the Colorado medical school where he recently withdrew from classes.

Investigators have described the apartment as being filled with chemicals, trip wires, jars of ammunition and possible mortar rounds.

"It is a very vexing problem how we'll get into that apartment safely," Chief Oates said. "I've personally never seen anything like what the pictures show us."

A law enforcement official familiar with the explosives left in the suspect's apartment described them as "pretty sophisticated" improvised explosive devices.

"These are not ordinary pipe bombs," said the investigator, who told Yahoo News on the condition his name would not be used. "No doubt it was meant to kill or maim any first responder that went into that apartment."

Officials said it could be Saturday or later before they get the suspect's home defused. If not, the investigator told Yahoo News, serious damage to the entire apartment building is a risk.

The thermal liquids left behind "could certainly heat up that room pretty quickly," he said. "We're not going to destroy a building."

Holmes is being held in the Arapahoe County Jail. Chief Oates said the man has an attorney, but refused to say if the alleged gunman is cooperating.

"I won't talk about his admissions," the police chief said. "The most important thing is that there is justice for these victims, and justice will occur in a courtroom."

Holmes is scheduled to make his first court appearance at 8:30 a.m. local time on Monday in Aurora.

Witnesses have given chilling descriptions of the scene at the movie theater.

"He was dressed in head-to-toe armor and looked like he meant business," said Jordan Crofter, who escaped the theater unharmed. "He just walked around like he was having fun. It was just target practice. His goal was to kill as many people as he could."

The number of casualties makes the incident one of the largest mass shootings in recent U.S. history.

What provoked the madness may not be clear anytime soon.

Holmes, a former college honors graduate who moved to Colorado to attend medical school, is not talking to investigators, a law enforcement official briefed on the investigation told The Associated Press.

The official spoke on condition of anonymity in discussing the ongoing case. Police also found jars of chemicals in Holmes' booby-trapped Aurora apartment with wires nearby.

"This is the act ? of a very deranged mind," said Colorado Governor John Hickenlooper.

Aurora Police Chief Dan Oates said hundreds of calls came in starting at 12:39 a.m. MDT on Friday, and officers were on the scene within 60 to 90 seconds. Some 200 officers eventually responded.

It is believed that Holmes acted alone, and the FBI said there was no indication of ties to any terrorist groups.

While some witnesses said the gunman entered through a side-door emergency exit at the front of the theater, a federal law enforcement official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said Holmes bought a ticket and went into the theater as part of the crowd.

The official said Holmes then apparently propped open an exit door in the theater as the movie was playing, donned the protective ballistic gear and opened fire, the AP reported.

Chief Oates said officers found an AR-15 assault rifle?the civilian form of the M-16?a Remington 12-guage shotgun and a .40-caliber Glock handgun in the theater and another identical handgun in the car. The gunman set off two devices that released a smoke or an irritant to distract the crowd.

"There were bullet (casings) just falling on my head. They were burning my forehead," said Jennifer Seeger, one of the first to spot Holmes as he stormed inside.

"I was just a deer in headlights. I didn't know what to do," she said. Then she ducked to the ground as the gunman shot people seated behind her.

She said she began crawling toward an exit when she saw a girl of about 14 "lying lifeless on the stairs." She saw a man with a bullet wound in his back and tried to check his pulse, but "I had to go. I was going to get shot."

"Every few seconds it was just: Boom, boom, boom," Seeger said. "He would reload and shoot and anyone who would try to leave would just get killed."

Some of the victims were treated for chemical exposure apparently related to canisters thrown by the gunman. Those hurt included a 4-month-old baby, who was treated at a hospital and released.

New York City's police commissioner said he was told the gunman had painted his hair red and called himself the Joker?Batman's nemesis?but Aurora police would not confirm that.

For a few moments, many moviegoers thought the initial commotion might have been a promotional stunt tied to the film's opening.

Quentin Caldwell said they were about 15 minutes into the film when he heard a very distinct "pop, pop, pop, pop."

"My wife jumped, and I just kind of sat there like, 'Oh, it was probably just really good special sound effects,'" he told CNN.

But Caldwell and his wife soon saw injured people and knew they needed to escape.

"There were people still sitting there waiting for the movie to continue," he said. "I looked at them like, 'This is real, there's something wrong, we need to leave now.'"

Those who knew Holmes as a youth describe him as a shy, intelligent person raised in California by parents who were active in their well-to-do suburban San Diego neighborhood. He played soccer at Westview High School and ran cross-country before going to college, the AP reported.

A University of Colorado-Denver spokeswoman said Holmes enrolled in a Ph.D. program in neuroscience a year ago but was in the process of withdrawing at the time of the shooting.

Police released a statement from Holmes' family: "Our hearts go out to those who were involved in this tragedy and to the families and friends of those involved."

It was the worst mass shooting in the U.S. since the Nov. 5, 2009, attack at Fort Hood, Texas. An Army psychiatrist is awaiting trial for killing 13 soldiers and civilians and wounding more than two dozen others.

In Colorado, it was the deadliest since the Columbine High School massacre on April 20, 1999, when two students opened fire in the Denver suburb of Littleton, killing 12 classmates and a teacher and wounding 26 others before killing themselves. Columbine High is about 12 miles from the theater.

UCLA researchers have developed a new transparent solar cell that is an advance toward giving windows in homes and other buildings the ability to generate electricity while still allowing people to see outside. Their study appears in the journal ACS Nano.

The UCLA team describes a new kind of polymer solar cell (PSC) that produces energy by absorbing mainly infrared light, not visible light, making the cells nearly 70% transparent to the human eye. They made the device from a photoactive plastic that converts infrared light into an electrical current.

"These results open the potential for visibly transparent polymer solar cells as add-on components of portable electronics, smart windows and building-integrated photovoltaics and in other applications," said study leader Yang Yang, a UCLA professor of materials science and engineering, who also is director of the Nano Renewable Energy Center at California NanoSystems Institute (CNSI).

Yang added that there has been intense world-wide interest in so-called polymer solar cells. "Our new PSCs are made from plastic-like materials and are lightweight and flexible," he said. "More importantly, they can be produced in high volume at low cost."

Polymer solar cells have attracted great attention due to their advantages over competing solar cell technologies. Scientists have also been intensely investigating PSCs for their potential in making unique advances for broader applications. Several such applications would be enabled by high-performance visibly transparent photovoltaic (PV) devices, including building-integrated photovoltaics and integrated PV chargers for portable electronics.

Previously, many attempts have been made toward demonstrating visibly transparent or semitransparent PSCs. However, these demonstrations often result in low visible light transparency and/or low device efficiency because suitable polymeric PV materials and efficient transparent conductors were not well deployed in device design and fabrication.

A team of UCLA researchers from the California NanoSystems Institute, the UCLA Henry Samueli School of Engineering and Applied Science and UCLA's Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry have demonstrated high-performance, solution-processed, visibly transparent polymer solar cells through the incorporation of near-infrared light-sensitive polymer and using silver nanowire composite films as the top transparent electrode. The near-infrared photoactive polymer absorbs more near-infrared light but is less sensitive to visible light, balancing solar cell performance and transparency in the visible wavelength region.

Another breakthrough is the transparent conductor made of a mixture of silver nanowire and titanium dioxide nanoparticles, which was able to replace the opaque metal electrode used in the past. This composite electrode also allows the solar cells to be fabricated economically by solution processing. With this combination, 4% power-conversion efficiency for solution-processed and visibly transparent polymer solar cells has been achieved.

"We are excited by this new invention on transparent solar cells, which applied our recent advances in transparent conducting windows (also published in ACS Nano) to fabricate these devices," said Paul S.Weiss, CNSI director and Fred Kavli Chair in NanoSystems Sciences.

The Importance of PABX Systems For Better Communication

Saturday, July 21, 2012 | 2:45 am

Private Automated Branch Exchange popularly known as PABX is the facility to convert company?s communication performance by enabling multiple telephone lines to internal extensions from external callers, through a single number. PABX has indeed expanded the opportunities of the small business houses that mostly use a single line. It facilitates multiple communications to take place simultaneously in different parts of the company. Since small businesses can not afford the luxury of increasing their headcount frequently to keep pace with the calls due to their limited fund constraint, PABX has come up as an attractive solution allowing large volumes of calls transfer with minimum human intervention. PABX not only transfers external callers to selected extensions automatically, it improves internal communication as well.

An important feature of PABX systems is speed dialing. Companies can now customize their own internal phone requirements to a great extent, and can bypass the need of the telecom providers for every innovation and adjustment ? courtesy PABX. Each PABX system provides best supply requirement and lends versatility. Being user friendly, it is easy to manage and needs economical training. PABX transfers a large number of calls in a short time, boosting better communications and customer relations eventually leading to higher profit. In order to direct calls to the exact destination, information is programmed into the telephone system. When a PABX system is operating at maximum efficiency, there is no need for operative staffing. Moreover due to direct access to target personnel the inquiry experience is better.

It is a fact that companies upgrading to a PABX system find their business performance greatly improved. However, due to the charges associated with installing such a network, a complete PABX system was beyond the budget of small companies in the past. Fortunately, these days smaller PABX?s are available in the market. Though such systems lack in certain aspects they still live up to their chief physical processing duties. Depending on the requirement and size, the system costs for PABX vary, ranging from a few hundred dollars to thousands. Most PABX systems function well for several years before companies consider upgrading or improving their system in line with their business growth.

Irrespective of the size of your business, there are distinct advantages to spending the money and investing in a PABX system. There are numerous PABX suppliers ? online as well as brick and mortar stores that offer PABX solution. Companies like uThetha advise you on the PABX system that fits your business best in the aggressive business world. Equipped with a professional and efficient telephone system, the Cape Town based company is a one stop shop for medium, small and corporate companies looking for telecommunications consultation, call savings, solutions, products and services. There is a recently retired optometrist who is still widely revered in his community for his opinion about all things visual.? He has always commanded my respect in making decisions for his patients by following the golden rule of ?Do Unto Others ? ?? Appreciative of his many referrals through the years of patients who had vision-based learning difficulties, I admired how he would give families more than one option for specialists to consult with regarding their children?s visual function.? It was never just ?take two tablets and call me in the morning?, and he would always take the time to explain why he was referring the patient.? In the beginning of our relationship he would personally call and give me background on the patient.? Over time he called less frequently, unless there was something unusual about the patient?s background or circumstances.? Ultimately he would say: ?I don?t have to tell you what to do or what to look for?.? When patients were referred by Dr. X, they would always call.? His word on matters was definitive.? Sometimes patients had concerns about the logistics of getting to us, or perhaps other considerations, and would ask Dr. X about other doctors who render vision therapy services.? ?You can certainly to elsewhere?, he?d say, ?but Dr. Press is the Moses of Vision Therapy?.? That?s a tough billing to live up to, but I always appreciated the confidence and welcomed the challenge.? Just yesterday our front desk told me about a patient who called last week, with an urgency to be seen, relating the Moses appellation.? But alas, the patient phoned back to cancel.? Turns out that Moses isn?t in his insurance plan!

I?ve blogged before about why I feel it?s important in rendering specialty services to remain outside the dictates of third party plans.? This struck a chord for me yesterday while I was reviewing Alisha?s progress in vision therapy with her mother, Amy.? Amy mentioned that after just two months of vision therapy she was already seeing significant changes in her daughter?s performance.? She was reading with more confidence, and her reading tutor who had been working with her before we began commented that the changes during the past two months have been remarkable.? This isn?t always the case, but when positive factors are in place, it no longer surprises me when improvement and transfer occur rapidly.

As Amy and I spoke, I? smiled as she hit all the high notes.? It was as if I could distill all the comments I?ve heard over the past 35 years into one conversation.? ?I had never heard of vision therapy before?.? ?I saw alot of good things about VT on the internet, but wondered why some considered it controversial?.? ?I come from a middle class family and some family members wondered why I would spend the summer investing in the cost and travel of coming here every week?.? ?I was? referred here by a learning specialist whose opinion I highly respect, and then when I took her for an OT evaluation and they asked if I had Alisha?s vision evaluated I decided to come?.? ?Even though I made the decision to come, I was still skeptical until I actually saw the changes?.? Amy?s comments were so heartfelt, she graciously agreed when I asked her if I could share her thoughts with other parents who may be facing the same self-doubt.? It isn?t always about the insurance.
