More than 200 diagnosed in fungal meningitis outbreak

By Maggie Fox, NBC News

More than 200 people in 14 states have either died or shown symptoms in an outbreak of rare fungal meningitis linked to contaminated pain injections, federal health officials said Sunday.?Fifteen people have died.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said 203 people had meningitis, while two had infections in their joints.

The CDC has also published its first case report of the outbreak, which began when a?Tennessee doctor diagnosed a patient with fungal meningitis on Sept. 18, nearly six weeks after getting a steroid injection for back pain.

The CDC says 26 of the patients have a confirmed fungal infection, and all but one are infected with a type of black mold called Exserohilum. It?s never been known to cause meningitis before, although it?s common in the environment and can cause sinus and eye infections. One patient has Aspergillus, another fungus that occasionally can cause meningitis if injected into the spine, as well as other infections.

Both grow slowly and don?t cause the classic symptoms of meningitis. ?Early in this outbreak, many patients with meningitis had only a few mild symptoms,? the CDC and state health offficials say in their report.

Worse, treatment can last months and requires infusions of two strong antifungal drugs, the CDC says. Right now, no one knows how long patients will have to be treated, and the drugs themselves can cause severe side effects such as kidney damage. As many as 14,000 patients may have been given the tainted steroids.

?Early identification and treatment of patients with fungal infections might reduce the risk for serious complications, such as stroke or death,? CDC says.

Meningitis is an inflammation of the spinal cord or the membrane surrounding the brain. It's extremely serious when caused by bacteria; viruses can also cause meningitis. Fungi and parasites cause it more rarely. Most of the patients in this outbreak have complained of headaches.

"FDA urges patients who believe they received an injection or other product compounded by NECC to remain vigilant for the signs and symptoms of infection, including meningitis. The signs and symptoms of meningitis include fever, headache, stiff neck, nausea and vomiting, photophobia (sensitivity to light) and altered mental status," the Food and Drug Administration said in a statement.

State and federal health officials are trying to find out how and why a Massachusetts pharmacy, the New England Compounding Center, managed to distribute so many vials of the steroid, called methylprednisolone. It can be injected into the spine or joints such as the knee or ankle to treat pain.

Massachusetts state health authorities say it appears NECC broke regulations in distributing the high volume of drugs. All of the cases so far have been linked to three affected batches of the steroid, although all of NECC?s products have been recalled.

A sister company, Ameridose, is also being investigated. "Based on the business relationship between NECC and Ameridose, FDA and the Massachusetts Board of Pharmacy launched a joint inspection at the Ameridose facility in Westborough, Massachusetts on October 10, 2012," the FDA said in a statement.

"As part of our efforts to protect the public health, FDA is investigating whether certain aspects of compounding practices and facility conditions observed at NECC may be present at the Ameridose facility. FDA will review whether Ameridose has procedures and facilities necessary to safely produce and provide sterile drug products. At this time, there is no known contamination of products produced by Ameridose."

Israeli airstrike kills senior Gaza militant

GAZA CITY, Gaza Strip (AP) ? Israel claimed a significant blow against al-Qaida-inspired militants in the Gaza Strip Sunday, killing one of the most influential leaders from an extreme branch of Islam that has targeted Egypt and Gaza's Hamas rulers as well as Israel.

Hisham Saidani was killed alongside another top militant in the northern Gaza Strip in an airstrike late Saturday, Israel's military said. He was one of the main ideological guides for the violent, ultra-conservative Islamic movements in Gaza known as Salafi jihadis.

The Israeli military said Saidani, 43, was suspected of carrying out attacks against Egyptian and Israeli targets, but they would not provide further information.

Militants on jihadi websites identified the other dead man as Ashraf Sabah, 37. They said he was the leader of another al-Qaida inspired group, Ansar al-Sunnah.

In recent years, a number of shadowy groups that claim inspiration from al-Qaida have been on the rise in Gaza. While they are not believed to have direct links with the global terror network, they share the same belief that they can impose their fundamentalist version of Islam by force and frequently borrow its tactics. They have also clashed with Gaza's ruling Islamic militant Hamas movement.

Saidani led a small group, "Tawhid wal Jihad," or "Monotheism and Holy War," believed responsible for killing of an Israeli civilian working along the Egyptian border last June. He was also linked to the Mujahideen Shura Council, another militant group operating in Gaza and Egypt's neighboring Sinai desert.

Salafi militants first emerged in Gaza around 2005, after Israel withdrew from the territory. Members of one such group, the Army of Islam, cooperated with Hamas in the abduction of an Israeli soldier the following year. But after Hamas seized power in Gaza in 2007, differences emerged, and the sides parted ways.

Several hundred Salafi militants are now believed to be in Gaza. Saidani was the best known.

Saidani returned to Gaza in 2008 when Gaza militants blew a hole through the border fence with Egypt. Thousands of people crossed the border at the time.

Followers of Saidani were responsible for kidnapping and killing Italian activist Vittorio Arrigoni in Gaza in March 2011. Saidani later denounced the act.

He sought to unite the many groups of ultraconservative Salafis in Gaza, according to jihadis commenting about his death.

In response to Saidani's death, al-Qaida's media arm warned Israel that its "joy will not last long."

"We fully trust our brothers that they will be capable of avenging the killing," said a statement by the Global Islamic Media Front, a European group that supports al-Qaida and other extremist organizations. The statement underscored Saidani's prominence among jihadis.

Over the past year, Israel has targeted militant Salafi militants with airstrikes in Gaza, seeing them as a new threat to its southern border.

On Sunday, Israeli airstrikes killed three more militants, said Palestinian health spokesman Ashraf al-Kidra. In all, five militants were killed in weekend fighting.

Israeli officials believe the militant Salafis sometimes cross between Gaza and Sinai, using the lawless Egyptian territory as a base to conduct attacks, or to flee after carrying out attacks elsewhere. Many adopt a Pakistani style of dress: long loose shirts over baggy pants, sandals and turbans.

They are considered a threat not only to Israel, but to Hamas and Egypt as well.

Militant Salafis consider Hamas, which itself is dedicated to Israel's destruction, to be too moderate because it seeks to establish a Palestinian state. Instead, they believe all Muslim lands should be united under the rule of fundamentalists, forcefully applying an extremely conservative version of Islam.

Most Salafis disavow militancy. They have lived quietly in Gaza for decades, some in separate, closed communities.

Hamas arrested Saidani, also known as Sheik Abu Walid-al-Maqdasi, last year in the one of most high-profile arrests against the territory's militant Salafis. He was released two months ago.

Saidani was also imprisoned in Egypt after he tried to join militants fighting in Iraq. He was arrested again after he tried to enter Gaza through smuggling tunnels that connect the two territories, according to a militant website that listed Saidani's biography.

Speaking to his Cabinet on Sunday, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu praised the attack.

"The global jihad is stepping up its efforts to harm us, and we will continue to act against it aggressively and powerfully, both reactively and pre-emptively," Netanyahu said.

During the last few days of violence, Palestinians fired more than 40 rockets at Israeli communities near Gaza, the military said. The salvos damaged property, but nobody was hurt.

Israel says it holds Hamas responsible for the barrages because it rules Gaza. The two have largely maintained an unwritten truce since a brief war nearly four years ago, but flare-ups occur occasionally.

In a separate development, the U.N.'s Middle East envoy harshly criticized attacks blamed on Israeli settlers against Palestinian farmers and their olive trees in the West Bank.

In a statement, Robert Serry said Israel must do more to protect Palestinians and their property in the West Bank. The West Bank, claimed by the Palestinians for a state, is under Israeli military rule.

"These acts are reprehensible, and I call on the government of Israel to bring those responsible to justice," Serry said.

The Israeli military said security forces were taking "every measure to ensure the safety and security of the local residents."

Placing foster baby with pregnant foster mom? - Adoption.com Forums

How many foster sibling groups are in the home, and how long has she had them in her care? Does she plan or is she open to adopting ANY of the other foster children? Are any of the other foster children CLOSE to RU? CLOSE to TPR? Obviously her license is not expired. How does that factor in? Is she considering letting it lapse or something?

It's difficult to predict, since there's not not a lot of information here. How far apart are the due dates betw. friend and birth mom?

If your friend is due in May 2013 and bio mom is due next month, that is a very different scenario to them both being due early Feb. 2013.

I'd wait as long as is permitted to tell the agency of pregnancy, unless doc. Rx's bedrest, then she'd have to tell...

Brad Pitt blasts U.S. 'War on Drugs,' calls for policy rethink

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Brad Pitt has thrown his weight behind a documentary that blasts America's 40-year war on drugs as a failure, calling policies that imprison huge numbers of drug-users a "charade" in urgent need of a rethink.

The Hollywood actor came aboard recently as an executive producer of filmmaker Eugene Jarecki's "The House I Live In," which won the Grand Jury Prize in January at the Sundance Film Festival. The film opened in wide release in the United States on Friday.

Ahead of a Los Angeles screening, Pitt and Jarecki spoke passionately about the "War on Drugs" which, according to the documentary, has cost more than $1 trillion and accounted for over 45 million arrests since 1971, and which preys largely on poor and minority communities.

"I know people are suffering because of it. I know I've lived a very privileged life in comparison and I can't stand for it," Pitt told Reuters on Friday, calling the government's War on Drugs policy a "charade."

"It's such bad strategy. It makes no sense. It perpetuates itself. You make a bust, you drive up profit, which makes more people want to get into it," he added. "To me, there's no question; we have to rethink this policy and we have to rethink it now."

"The House I Live In" was filmed in more than 20 states and tells stories from many sides of the issue, including Jarecki's African-American nanny, a drug dealer, narcotics officer, inmate, judge, grieving mother, senator and others.

It also shows that although the United States accounts for only 5 percent of the world's population, it has 25 percent of its prison population. Additionally, African Americans, who make up roughly 13 percent of the population and 14 percent of its drug users, account for 56 percent of those incarcerated for drug crimes.

FILM GETS STRONG REVIEWS

The Los Angeles Times called the film "one of the most important pieces of nonfiction to hit the screen in years," while the Hollywood Reporter said it was a "potent cry for a drastic rethinking of America's War on Drugs" and that the film "should connect solidly with viewers at a moment when it seems possible to change public attitudes."

Pitt, who like his partner Angelina Jolie is no stranger to humanitarian and social causes, said that after seeing Jarecki's documentary, coupled with his own involvement with aiding the victims of Hurricane Katrina, he realized the U.S. government's war on drugs may not just be about drugs alone.

"That was an interesting premise for me," the "Moneyball" star told Reuters. "I hadn't thought about it in that matter (before seeing the film), but certainly what we witnessed after Katrina proved the idea had validity."

Some critics have attributed the slow response of the U.S. government to Katrina in 2005, and the devastating flooding of poor areas of New Orleans, to race and class issues.

Now, Pitt believes the War on Drugs is the greatest obstacle for impoverished parts of society, including African Americans, from getting ahead.

"It's a never-ending cycle. But then when you look at it after what we experienced with Katrina - this is Eugene's point and what he wanted to investigate - it is actually being used to cap a portion of our society and holding them back, shackling them," the actor said, adding that he signed on as executive producer to help promote the documentary.

Jarecki contrasted the justice system's attitude to bankers in the 2008 financial meltdown of Wall Street, who "got a slap on the hand," with its stance toward young drug-takers.

"A kid right now a block from here is going to have a cop find an ounce of something on his person and he's going spend 10 years in jail. These are all indicators of a society that has lost its way - and it has lost its way in the direction of injustice and unfairness," Jarecki told Reuters.

Abundance: 6 Reasons Why You're Not Getting What You Want in Life

Why aren?t you getting the abundance you want in life?

I am open to receive

Have you been repeating affirmations and visualizing your abundance, to no avail?

So many of us struggle with getting what we want in our lives.

Most people want the same things; great health, loving relationships, spiritual growth, a satisfying career and stable finances.

None of these desires are unachievable or extraordinary in any way so, why do so many people try over and over and get no where?

I get email every day asking for answers to: ?Why am I not getting what I want in my life?

This is what motivated me to start the Create Your Abundance Now! workshop series. I want to share what I?ve learned through my research and using my own life as a laboratory for the last three decades, and see you create the abundance and life you desire.

When the film, ?The Secret,? came out in 2006 I was glad to see the teaching that, we create our reality with our thoughts going mainstream. What I was unhappy about was that it focused only on one spiritual principle, ?the law of attraction,? to the exclusion of all the others.

There are numerous universal principles and sub-principles whose numbers change according to who you read.? After years of searching through many? confusing and arcane texts I found Raymond Holliwell, author of the 1939 classic, ?Working With the Law: 11 Truth Principles for Successful Living. ?

Holliwel?s book clearly explains the other universal principles aside from the law of attraction, and how you create what you experience in life. I recommend it.

Here are the 6 most common reasons you don?t manifest what you want in life:

1. Unclear about what you want. If you are not clear, always changing your mind or choose something because you believe it is the ?right thing? rather than what your heart desires, your ability to manifest will be handicapped.

The antidote: Become crystal clear about what you want. Write down your goal and describe it. Know what your life will look like and what you feel like when you manifest your desire. Do not be ashamed of what you want and substitute something else because you feel embarrassed.

2. Unresolved emotional issues. If you haven?t worked on self-love issues such as unworthiness and not feeling ?good enough? they will undermine your ability to manifest. My friend Evelyn Lim has written an excellent book, ?Self-Love Secrets,? that I highly recommend.

The antidote: Do some work on yourself to uncover the negative messages you absorbed when you were in your formative years and release them. Emotional catches are like splinters sticking out of the paneling that pull your sweater when you walk by. How can you feel good when you?re constantly being ?pulled? like this? When you feel bad you will not resonate to the good you desire. You?ve got to ?feel good? about yourself to manifest your good.

3. Fears. If you fear change, being in the spot-light by becoming success or the shame of failure this too will hold you back from achieving your goals.

The Antidote: Embrace change. Often change is brought about by problems. When we face the problem and overcome it we grow more confident in our ability to deal with challenges. The confidence that comes with experience is also how we overcome fear of failure and success. You have to fail once in a while to not only learn what works but, to know that it is not the end of the world.

4. False beliefs. If you believe that there is ?only so much to go round? or that abundance is difficult to attain you will push away the very things you desire.

The antidote: Listen to the voices in your head. Are they critical and negative? Are the yours or are they remnants of voices you heard growing up from parents and authority figures? Many times our lives run on unconscious beliefs. Look back and see if you absorbed a false belief such as money is the root of all evil,? and work on replacing these thoughts with something more constructive.

5. Withholding forgiveness. If you cannot let go of the past and forgive you will block new good from entering your life.

The antidote: Forgive, let go of the past and live with gratitude for the present. Past hurts that remain unhealed are like black holes that suck in our energy and joy like a vacuum. When we read that forgiveness is not for the other person but, for ourselves this is the reason. Forgive and let go to move on in life.

6. Ingratitude. When we focus only on what we don?t have ? we skew our perception of life from noticing abundance to seeing only lack.

The antidote: Gratitude. Focus on what you have now and give thanks for that. The more you notice the good in your life the more your abundance will grow. Keeping an abundance journal is a great way to train your mind to notice all the things you have to be grateful for.

This is only a short list of some of the reasons we don?t get what we want. There are more to be sure.

What?s holding you back from getting what you want in life? Can you identify with any of these challenges?

Students recite verses from the Quran as they pray for Malala Yousafzai, who was shot in the head in a Taliban assassination attempt, at her school in Mingora, the main town of Swat Valley on Friday

By Mushtaq Yusufzai, NBC News, and wire reports

PESHAWAR, Pakistan - Three suspects in the shooting of 14-year old Pakistani peace campaigner Malala Yousafzai have been arrested, police in Swat Valley claimed Friday.

Police said the suspects, aged between 17 and 22, had claimed the person who organized the attack Tuesday -- in which two other young girls were shot and injured -- was a man called Attaullah.

?

"During raids in Swat on Thursday night, we captured three culprits involved in attack on Malala,? Swat police chief Gul Afzal Afridi told NBC News by phone.

?During initial interrogation, they revealed that Attaullah was mastermind of the attack and he is still at large,? he added.

Afridi said that the attackers were from the Sangota area of Swat. Police were conducting other raids in an attempt to find Attaullah.

The Malala Yousufzai I know

The Swat-based Pakistani Taiban refused to confirm if any of their members have been arrested, but claimed they had "dozens" of trained gunmen in the area.

'Satisfactory' condition
Malala, who was nominated for the International Children's Peace Prize in 2011 for articles she wrote under a pseudonym for U.K. broadcaster the BBC and won the National Peace Prize in Pakistan, ?was in a "satisfactory" condition at a military hospital, a spokesman said Friday. She started writing for the BBC when she was just 11.

14-year old Malala Yousafzai remains in critical condition after Taliban gunmen shot her in the head and neck. NBC's Amna Nawaz reports.

Maj. Gen. Asim Saleem Bajwa said she was being kept unconscious and on a ventilator, and doctors would decide when to take her off.

"Her blood pressure is normal. Heartbeat is normal, and thanks to God, her condition is satisfactory," Bajwa said.

Bajwa said the bullet entered her head and went into her neck toward her spine, but it was too soon to say whether she had any significant head injury.

Three suspects in the shooting of 14-year old Pakistani peace campaigner Malala Yousafzai have been arrested.

Reuters reported Friday that the attack was ordered by one of the Taliban's most feared commanders, Maulana Fazlullah.

?"We had no intentions to kill her but were forced when she would not stop (speaking against us)," said Sirajuddin Ahmad, a spokesman of Swat Taliban now based in Afghanistan's Kunar province.

'I am Malala' declare protesters as vigils continue for girl shot by the Taliban

He said the Taliban held a meeting a few months ago at which they unanimously agreed to kill her. The task was then given to military commanders to carry out.

The shooting sparked widespread condemnation and there has been an outpouring of praise for her bravery from Pakistani and international leaders.

The school she attended in Mingora, owned and operated by her father, reopened Friday. The atmosphere was grim as children and teachers tried to come to terms with what happened to their star pupil.

"We have decided to open the school after two days to overcome the fear among our students that gripped them due to the attack. The number of students is low today. We have not resumed regular teaching activity, but held an assembly to pray for Malala and the other two injured girls," said one of the teachers, Zafar Ali Khan.

NBC's Amna Nawaz reports on the latest in the efforts to save Pakistani activist Malala Yousafzai, who was shot Tuesday by the Taliban.

Police had been deployed around the school, but even so, many students stayed away.

"Although we have gathered here for to pray for Malala, this shows we will keep her mission going," Ayesha Khan, a ninth-grade student. "Many of the students haven't come due to fear, but I believe this fear will subside ultimately."?

The Associated Press and Reuters contributed to this report.

Embattled San Francisco sheriff has contentious first day back

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Embattled San Francisco Sheriff Ross Mirkarimi had a contentious first day back on the job on Wednesday, as the city's mayor continued to rebuke the lawman over a domestic violence conviction that nearly cost the sheriff his badge.

But a prominent supporter of Mirkarimi, who found himself fighting for his political life after a New Year's Eve quarrel with his wife turned physical, said he expects the sheriff and his opponents in local government to eventually smooth over their differences.

The city's Board of Supervisors, tasked with deciding if Mirkarimi could return to his job, voted 7-4 on Tuesday in favor of removal but the count was two votes shy of the number required by city rules to oust him.

Mayor Ed Lee had suspended Mirkarimi without pay in March and initiated the misconduct proceedings against him in a saga that rocked San Francisco's political establishment.

"The facts clearly demonstrate that Ross Mirkarimi's actions and his domestic violence-related conviction falls below the ethical conduct we expect of our elected sheriff and constitutes official misconduct," Lee said in a statement on Wednesday.

"The board's decision returns a convicted domestic batterer to lead the sheriff's office, and I am concerned about our city's nationally recognized domestic-violence programs," Lee said.

The case against Mirkarimi stemmed from a squabble with his wife, Venezuelan television actress Eliana Lopez, that the couple carried on in front of their young son, Theo, over her plans to take the boy to her home country.

In a cell phone video shot by a neighbor the next day, Lopez tearfully claimed her husband had grabbed her arm with such force that he left it black and blue. She said it was the second time he had bruised her.

Lopez later refused to testify against her husband in the ensuing domestic abuse case and sought to bar the video from being introduced as evidence.

In a deal with prosecutors, Mirkarimi pleaded guilty to a single charge of false imprisonment.

Mirkarimi said on local radio station KQED on Wednesday he expected to restart his work at the Sheriff's Department by getting a briefing from Vicki Hennessy, whom Lee had pulled out of retirement in March to replace Mirkarimi as acting sheriff.

David Waggoner, Mirkarimi's attorney, said the city had agreed to pay the sheriff back pay for the time he was suspended. Mirkarimi could not be reached for comment.

Former Mayor Art Agnos, Mirkarimi's friend and mentor, predicted the sheriff and other city officials would quickly set aside their differences. "Politicians make up very quickly," Agnos told Reuters. "Ross has always had a great relationship with domestic-violence advocates."

Suzy Loftus, a San Francisco police commissioner and former prosecutor, remained skeptical: "Let's see if (Mirkarimi) continues to minimize his conduct and portray himself as a victim or steps up and really tries to rehabilitate himself."

Health Fitness Wellness | The Amazing works of MOHIMA :)

Definition of?Health: Health is the physical, mental and social balance in a person.

Definition of?Fitness: Fitness is the physical capability to execute actions in daily life in various environments. The ability to meet the demands of the environment.

What are the 5 components of Health Related Fitness? Briefly explain them and give a sport where that component would be vital?

  • Cardiovascular fitness:?It refers to the stamina or the ability to execute actions continuously for a certain time period. Eg, Cross Country.
  • Flexibility:?Flexibility is how well our joints can be bent. Eg, Dance.
  • Body composition:?It is the physical makeup of the body. Eg, all sports
  • Muscular Endurance:?It is being able to exert for a certain time period. Eg, Swimming
  • Muscular Strength:?It is the amount of force that your body is able exert on an object.?Eg, Weight lifting

Components of Skill Related Fitness:

Agility: The ability to rapidly and accurately change the direction of the whole body in space.

Balance: The ability to maintain equality while stationary or moving.

Coordination: The ability to use the senses and body parts in order to perform motor tasks smoothly and accurately.

Power: The amount of force a muscle can exert.

Reaction Time: The ability to respond quickly to stimuli.

Speed: The amount of time it takes the body to perform specific tasks.

Level ?8/9/10 My Cardio Vascular Endurance is strong
I run very often and do not get tired.
I am very motivated to do CV fitness during the week at least 4 times.
I feel very strong in my chosen sports from a CV perspective.
I feel great after I run
I think I would score very highly on a CV endurance test.
My Vo2 max is above 40
Level 6/7 My CV endurance is good. I run regularly outside of school.
I am usually motivated to run and feel good afterwards.
When it starts to hurt, I dig in deep and find that extra stamina to keep going.
My Vo2 max is above 30
Level 4/5 My CV endurance could be better. I can run for a small distance without getting tired but then want to stop. Maybe my motivation drops or my heart hurts and I get out of breath.
I don?t really do much for my CV endurance fitness outside of school.
My Vo2 max is above 20
Level 1/2/3 My CV endurance is not very good. I get out of breath easily. My heart hurts, my head hurts and I get dizzy. My body struggles to cope with the demands placed upon me.
I feel very bad after doing CV endurance exercise.
My Vo2 max is below 20
MY OWN Level
5
Why??

because I don?t really do much running outside school. I also think I should improve my running skills.

Cooper test

We did the cooper test where we ran as far as possible in 12mins. I ran 1600m in 12 mins. I think I could have done better but as I?m not into any such sports these days, I guess it wasn?t that bad. But I can try and improve during cross country unit.

?

Fitness Test

We did a fitness test in class where we analyzed different aspects of fitness by carrying out some?exercises.

To begin with, we measured our height and weight and used BMI to check whether we had a healthy weight or not. I was quite satisfied with my result as it said I had a healthy weight for my age and my BMI was 23.0. However BMI cannot be fully trusted upon as the weight of a person can be also affected by their muscles and other factors.

Then we counted how many burpees we could do in a minute. Burpees help in testing agility, co-ordination and cardio-vascular endurance. I did 30 burpees in a minute and was quite satisfied that each one of them took me 2 seconds. However by the end of a minute I was panting badly so that might refer to me not being as fit as I?m supposed to be.

Then we did vertical jump heights which tested our muscular strength. I reached around 33 inches. I think it also depended on our height as there is certainly a limit to the level you can achieve depending on ur height.

We did a flexibility test and I think I was really good as I know my flexibility is quite good as I dance a lot. We used the presidents and council flexibility test equipment which was a box with a slider on top and we had to reach out to our toes and push the slider as far as we could.

We also did sit ups and push ups and counted how many we could do in a minute. I did 29 sit ups in a minute which was average. However due to lack of time I couldn?t do the push-ups.

Self Analysis

I feel that I have an average level of fitness when it comes to cardio-vascular endurance, muscular endurance, and muscular strength. The reason for this could be the lack of physical activities in my daily life as I don?t play any sport. However my flexibility is at a high level and body composition is also at a high level as I dance a lot. I take quite a few dance lessons and dance is a part of my daily routine. Flexibility is one of the main demands for fitness in dance. Thus I have developed it over a long time.

I could improve the other areas of fitness by trying and probably going for a run on the weekends. Or by setting a set of exercises for myself and make sure that I execute them everyday without fail. The fitness unit has helped me understand the different types of workouts that can help us build our body. So after field studies, I will start doing them regularly.

SMART GOALS

  1. To be able to do a split by the end of this year. I will stretch every single day and there are exercises that help you do a split. They will be really helpful to incorporate in a dance choreography. Also it will take my flexibility a level higher.
  2. To run cross country under 16 mins. I will run on the weekends if I can. I shall not stop during my run and won?t stop walking. I shall make use of music and mental motivation to help me achieve my goal.
  3. I will try and take the role of leadership in group games. I will either try to lead the people in my team when we are divided in groups or try and be a good listener. I think as a sports person and as a human being, leadership and listening skills are extremely important.

Stephan Bonnar: ?People aren?t expecting much out of me?

At UFC 153 this weekend, Stephan Bonnar will get a chance to shock the world. Well, the portion of the world who cares about MMA, anyway. If he manages a win against Anderson Silva, the world's best fighter, he will pull off the biggest upset in MMA history. Heck, it will be a surprise if he lasts all three rounds against Silva.

In Bonnar's eyes, this puts him in a great position. No one thinks he will win, so he can't lose.

"People aren't expecting much out of me. It's like, no stress. No pressure. It's really a good place to be," Bonnar said. "It doesn't matter if I'm the undercard or the main event, and I'm going to try to steal the show."

Calls for oversight grow as meningitis death toll mounts

NASHVILLE, Tennessee (Reuters) - The toll from the outbreak of fungal meningitis tied to contaminated steroid shots that has killed 12 people in the United States was expected to grow on Wednesday, raising pressure for stricter oversight of a largely unregulated corner of the pharmaceutical world.

On Tuesday, the outbreak claimed four more lives and Florida became the latest state to report at least one death linked to the illness in a widening health scare.

Since the September 25 recall of three lots of a steroid produced by a Massachusetts company, the outbreak has spread to 10 states and infected 121 people, according to state health departments and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

In five states -- Tennessee, Michigan, Maryland, Virginia, and Florida -- the outbreak has claimed lives, with the latest victim a 70-year-old man in Florida.

As many as 13,000 people received the injections to relieve back pain and other complaints and are at risk of infection, the CDC said, although the number ultimately stricken is likely to be far fewer.

For the first time on Tuesday, Tennessee state health officials gave an estimate of the rate of infection among those patients who received injections from the recalled steroid supplies.

Approximately 5 percent of patients treated with the suspect medication have contracted meningitis, said Dr. David Reagan, chief medical officer for the Tennessee Department of Health. Based on that rate of infection and the 13,000 shots given, the number of confirmed cases could grow to about 650 from the current 121.

"We expect that most people who were exposed to this will not develop a fungal infection," Reagan said.

Meningitis is an infection of the membranes covering the brain and spinal cord. Symptoms include headache, fever and nausea. Fungal meningitis, unlike viral and bacterial meningitis, is not contagious.

The outbreak has alarmed health officials and highlighted a gap in regulation of so-called pharmacy compounders, which are facilities that take drug ingredients and package them into medications and dosages for specific clients.

The federal Food and Drug Administration regulates only the ingredients and not the compounders, which are subject to a patchwork of state oversight.

Some of the thousands of people exposed may have to wait anxiously for weeks because the incubation period of the disease is up to a month, health experts said.

The potentially tainted steroid vials, which have been recalled, were shipped to 76 facilities in 23 states, the CDC has said.

Tennessee has been the hardest hit state, with six reported deaths and 39 cases of meningitis, followed by Michigan with three deaths and 25 cases, Virginia with one death and 24 cases and Maryland with one death and eight cases.

The other states with cases are Indiana (12), Florida (6), Minnesota (3), North Carolina (2), Ohio (1) and New Jersey (1).

Some babies do so with little effort while others may struggle to have a taste of that succulent colostrum. The instinct of sucking, eating and feeding in personal financial palace could be linked to consumption.
Consumption as it turns out can be viewed as expenditure, an investment. At the extreme end of this inborn trait, is waning, being deprived of life-sustaining nourishment.
In between, the mother would have started introducing the baby to solid food. The prospect of solid food is a hash reality to the unsuspecting baby. Take a moment now as an adult and try hard to reflect on your early attitude towards money. Your early attitude towards money plays a very potent influence in your present day perception of money.
We shall follow a toddler, by way of looking at its personal financial life cycle ? through the ?cradle to the grave? model.
The personal financial life cycle describes a process where we are in our life and how it affects our financial situation. In essence, the ?cradle to the grave? model attempts to show us by way of measuring where we are now and how to get to the next stage in the personal financial life cycle.
Essentially, understanding the personal financial life cycle will at least help to avoid the here and now life style, that is the rear view mirror effect of saying: ?I wish I had done that?? or ?I wish didn?t do this??
Personal finance is derived from the world of corporate finance in that it makes use of the principles and techniques of corporate finance and applies them to an individual?s money management skills, especially the methods of allocating the financial resources.
Others have called this process financial fitness, a state of financial wellbeing.
Under personal finance, the objectives are primarily to attain financial security and independence from the parents. Some might include the cruel world.
Looking at the objectives of personal finance, with life being what it is, very few will appreciate the objectives. The anchor to this is the need to have financial literacy skills.
Financial literacy is the ability to read and be able to understand the story behind the numbers. For example, when you read the numbers on the utility bill, what story do they tell you?
Financial literacy will give you financial options which can lead you to financial security and independence.
A financial plan is a tool that is used to achieve financial success. It said that we all pass failure on our way to success so it is important to have a plan and at best written one.
Financial goals, like other goals, should be set within a structure. One should be able state exactly what they want to do with the money.
With the ban on using the dollar to settle domestic deals the amount in Kwacha terms, the financial plan should be doable. One should also know when they have arrived, at success however they have defined it.
The basic education which lacks financial literacy skills, will not prepare us to live through the personal financial life cycle?s needs and wants.
We need to understand the importance of financial independence and financial systems such as banks, stock markets and real estate.
The parents being financially savvy may opt for a savings account that compound interest. Compound interest has been proclaimed to be the eighth wonder of the world.
It works financial miracles since it has age on its side. Through the savings account, one is able to appreciate the benefit of a savings when the parents give them the pin number.
Such practical skills have a long lasting effect on a child.
When shopping, one might also consider consulting a thin note book. The shopper could be ticking the note book each time they pick up an item from the shelves. That is how a budget is born.
A budget is a financial planning tool as it shows the user where the money is coming from, where it is being expended and the balance. A balance is like food left over when you are satisfied or when you ask for more food, yet you know that the pot is empty.
The left-over is known as a surplus and the yearning for more is a deficit.
A surplus budget will enable you to meet your goals and grow. A balanced budget will live you dazzled like a rabbit blinded by the approaching head lights of a truck.
A budget deficit on the other hand tells you that you have crossed the red line. Akin to a rally driver driving dangerously, it is time to apply the brakes on spending.
Perhaps one would consider applying the now abused austerity buzz word doing the rounds in Europe in the hope that the in flow side of the budget will also improve.
Apart from the budget telling the money story, one would come out wiser by learning how to communicate and gain self-discipline of living within the budget.
With the rebasing of the Kwacha, perhaps the Bank Governor could print instructions on the new Kwacha. Until then, money will still remain as the only commodity that does not come with instructions on how to use it.
When marriage vows are exchanged, people suddenly remember the catchphrase ?for richer for poorer? and wonder why not add, financially ever after. Perhaps the fairy tale stories know better and that is why they all end with happily ever after.
During courtship, money is seldom discussed apart from mentioning what money buys such as for the last time ? talk time. Money attitudes resurface later in marriage life. The very poor attitudes which we cling to namely me-mine and not we-us of money are skin tight.
A couple that is sitting on the three S?s and has a functioning knowledge of budgets will soon learn that it is not too late to become a financial wizard.
The benefits of financial literacy are that it improves the couple?s decision making, a source of happiness and reduces the risk of money fights. The ?energy? saved from the money fights will enable the couple to look at the needs of their siblings, food, education, health, and shelter and wealth creation.
In the intervening period, the kids will be leaving the nest. An empty nest usually turns the clock backwards in time.
Meanwhile, retirement which is ever present, is given a back seat during the life long journey. In fact, retirement planning should start the day one is born.
Old age, as those who have lived through it will tell you, has its own real life drama. The life drama should not stop one from thinking of writing a will and last testament.
The very thought of writing a will evokes death, perhaps that is why so many Zambians, short of saying Africans, never write wills.
