Rubio: Immigration now or never for GOP

Why can she never win?? Poor Jennifer Aniston, lonely lady of Los Angeles, scorned bride and future crone. All she wants to do is marry Justin Theroux as planned, but of course then her ex, Brad Pitt, had to go and make plans to marry Angelina Jolie this summer, thus ruining everything. So Aniston is pushing back her wedding plans, it's said, to an unknown time, in the fear that the two events will be associated. So tragic. Jennifer Aniston just cannot get a break. ...

First Person: Dysthymia Is a Hidden Depression

The fifth edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5) will be released in May. Yahoo is featuring first-person stories from Americans who are diagnosed with some of the most common mental health disorders in the United States. Here's one story.

FIRST PERSON | I penned depressing, dark poems and suicidal short stories as a teenager. Living in a small town, I participated in drugs and alcohol. It could have been "typical" teenage behavior. I thought so, even though I'd dropped out of high school and continued the sex, drugs, and drinking.

At 17, I left home with a man 12 years older than myself, continuing the pattern; notebooks were filled with poems on loneliness, self-loathing, and abuse. I amped myself up on drugs for the energy to work. I cared about nothing but the constant irrational fears itching inside my head. Even the abuse that man I'd left home for was nothing but fodder for a pen and paper.

Within a year, I tried to kill myself. It was a simple thing; I wasn't in a state of panic or heartbreak. I was terrified of death. But I'd decided I wouldn't allow the abuse to kill me and give someone else the satisfaction of having done it.

I swallowed a bottle of high-end pain killers and closed my eyes.

After the incident -- which I didn't care had failed -- I went to a psychiatrist once. A dreary place in Denver stinking of mold, catering to drifters with no money or home address; I answered questions that showed a total lack of interest, very poor self-esteem, little to no energy, and withdrawal from society at every opportunity.

Depression. It sounds so self-pitying, just a word filled with stigma and angst. I never returned.

Teenage years blurred into official adulthood. Believing I had no prospects, I remained with the man who'd come and go from prison, stints of time during which I wrote letters that expressed all the right emotions of longing and love. Promises to remain faithful and to be waiting; everything I knew I should feel but didn't.

Pregnancy drove me to seek help and leave the abuse behind. Since I was seeing a physician, I assumed that they would be able to help me. Depression reconfirmed, I went from one anti-depressant to another as they stopped working and I'd be floored by fear and depression. Bouts of energy broke in, an escape, and the diagnosis became bipolar.

The series of drugs that came after this diagnosis spun me into an anxiety breakdown of horror that paralyzed me.

Fifteen years later, I've dropped the stigmas and see a psychiatrist. Dysthymia was the problem all along, a sneaky form of depression that is acute and chronic. I deal with its common co-disorder, anxiety, with therapy. And I find myself optimistic, wistful, wishing I'd had the chance to have a life before.

More than tagging, what I'd love from Instagram is in-network sharing

More than tagging, what I'd love from Instagram is sharing

Yesterday Instagram added tagging to their service, so you can identify friends who are in your photos. Facebook and even Google+ have had this for a while, and it's fine. What I really want, however, is in-network sharing. The ability to share great Instagrams on Instagram.

On Twitter, if a friend tweets something amazing, I can re-tweet on Twitter, and the people who follow me can discover it. On Google+, if a friend posts something amazing, I can share it on G+, and the people who follow me can likewise discover it. Many other social services have similar features. Friends retweeting or sharing within the network is how we all find new and interesting people to add within those networks. It's the easiest, simplest way to grow.

On Instagram, I can Like amazing photos, but I can't share them with my friends on Instagram. If @safesolvent hits "The Stance" on top of the most spectacular cliff imaginable, or @davidlundbladphotography captures the perfect fashion candid, I have no ability to let anyone else on Instagram experience it with me -- I have to use the built-in feature to share to Facebook or Twitter, or manually share to G+ or other services.

In-network sharing is such a common social feature that Instagram certainly must have considered it, and must have gotten the request for it multiple times. Their vision for the service may not align with sharing, or they may not yet be ready to introduce it the way they want to.

Still, it's something I'd love to see, and sooner rather than later. There's so much amazing work on Instagram, it's a shame it can't be shared on Instagram. Let me know what you think, either in the comments below or on Instagram

Police clash with protesters after May Day rally in Seattle

By Eric M. Johnson

SEATTLE (Reuters) - Protesters clashed with police in Seattle on Wednesday as a May Day rally that began peacefully turned violent after dark, with demonstrators hurling objects at officers who responded by firing flash-bang grenades and pepper spray.

One protester was seen using a skateboard to smash windows at a Walgreens drug store in the city's Capitol Hill neighborhood, and others overturned trash cans and lined up newspaper display racks to block police.

Officers in riot gear, some riding in armored SWAT vehicles, repeatedly fired the grenades and tried to disperse the crowd.

Seattle police said that as of 9 p.m. local time, 11 adults and 2 juveniles had been arrested for assaults and property damage. Several people were shown on local TV stations being taken into custody.

Seattle police said in a tweet that one officer was injured by a thrown object. His condition was not immediately clear.

The violence broke out as darkness fell in Seattle following a day of May Day rallies in cities across the U.S. West that were planned by a coalition of organized labor activists, students, civil rights advocates and members of the clergy to call for an overhaul of immigration laws.

In Los Angeles, thousands of protesters marched through downtown Los Angeles waving American flags and carrying signs with the slogan, "Stop deportations."

The demonstrators chanted in Spanish, "Obama! Escucha! Estamos en la lucha!" ("Obama! Listen! We are in the fight!"), as they marched under sunny skies down one of downtown's main thoroughfares.

The march spanned across more than two large city blocks, and one police officer told Reuters that unofficial estimates put the size of the crowd at roughly 3,500 people. No arrests were reported.

In Arizona, where a state crackdown against illegal immigration was signed into law three years ago, several hundred people joined a late-afternoon rally outside the state Capitol in Phoenix, ahead of a march through downtown.

The protests come about two weeks after a bipartisan group of U.S. senators introduced an 844-page bill, backed by President Barack Obama, that would rewrite many of America's immigration laws.

A centerpiece of the measure would create a path to legal status and ultimately citizenship for many of the 11 million undocumented immigrants in the United States.

It also aims to secure the U.S. border with Mexico against illegal entry and to make it easier for industry, particularly high-tech businesses and agriculture, to hire workers from abroad when needed.

Google files patent for smartwatch with Glass-like touchpads and functionality

Image

Starting to get bored with Google Glass already? Well, it seems like Mountain View's trying to patent some of that functionality for a smartwatch, in a substantially different way than it did before. According to an application submitted to the USPTO, such a device would include standard smartwatch functions like a wireless transceiver, display and processor, but could also be equipped with two touchpads located on each side of the bezel. Those could enable "pinch, stretch and scroll on a platform with limited space available for user input," and would also communicate "with the clock line or data line." That means they'd control all the smartwatch functions, of course, but Google may be leaving the door open for it to control other devices as well, judging by the cagey wording -- perhaps sidestepping the need to reach for or yell at your eyewear.
